Default Correct Oil Level- Help!

Can anyone please indicate typical oil level in the oil pan. My new block had the oil dipstick boss unfinished so the machine shop also machined and drilled the proper hole. I'm verifying the level now but really have no benchmark for doing it. TIA

you want to stay below the windage tray if you have one. if you do not have a windage tray you want to stay below the rotating assy. measure from the block pan rail down to slightly below the tray or assy. set your oil pan on a level area and pour water in using a quart container till you reach that distance from the pan flange. add 1 quart for the filter and you will have the amount in quarts to fill the engine. after you put the pan on the engine and add the correct amount of oil to the pan less the quart for the filter. install your dip stick and make a mark at this level for the full mark. now add 1 more quart for the filter and then use a drill primer to fill the filter and prime the engine :chevy

Dont oil pans have a standard capacity? IE 5 ,6, 7qt. What pan are you usin? That should inicate the amount of oil needed to fill. It shouldnt be much different from what that block requires with its respective oil pan.

some times you do not know what size pan or if you have the correct dipstick and tube and you have to do the measurement. i check all my after market race pans this way. this is because some maufactures list the capacity including the filter and some do not include the filter and they never say which way they do it. :chevy

Its a 7.5 qt (w/ Large oil filter). The block had no hole for a dipstick...so the machine shop machined one in....but somehow the stock dipstick assembly inserts deeper into the oil now....

So its 7.5qt with large filter. So spin on a large filter and dump in 7.5 qts. Then after initial start up to circulate the oil, shut it down, pull the stick and wipe it clean, then dip it in again and pull it out and note the level. Then file your own full mark at that level.
