Default Re: Aluminum flywheel question

Anyone ever try one? How are they on the street? Where the gains noticable? Is it doable? My setup is a 383,3.73 rear gear, 2.68 first gear ratio.

Thanks

KM

Not aluminum, but a lightweight nodular iron wheel. The weight is all the matters as far as the effect goes. Made a very noticeable difference in first gear especially. Not hard at all to drive. Just use slightly more RPM for normal starts. Of course you can go crazy and buy very low weight circle track pieces, which would be very difficult to drive with. The stock 30lb. wheel is designed for extreme ease of getting the car started, at the expense of acceleration.

Here's a link to some physics analysis of the situation:

Drag racers sometimes use extra heavy wheels, to help pull the car out of the hole without bogging. But, they are using extra sticky tires that won't spin, and are willing to sacrifice the extra energy needed to spin the wheel back up after the launch pulls the RPM down.
