Timming retard on launch for traction?

I posted this on the Drag Racing section but I
thought Some of the engine tuners something about this

I'm looking into a MSD 8977 Ingition controler

Does anybody have any expirence with programing launch retard
into their timing curve to help hookup on the launch??

This was suggested to me to help with massive wheel spin off the
line. Short of buying slicks which I won't do because I still have
a D36 (which will be replaced in due time)

I have heard of this before, But can't find any body with some direct expirence

Any help would be Apprecated

Real common in NMCA racing with the 800 HP drag radial guys. Pretty easy to do..check out MSD controllers. You can set it to advance at a predetermined time after launch and can even bring it in progressively. You don't need the mega $$ boxes, check out all their options, it can be done several ways.

Sounds similar to one of the methods used in factory traction control systems. While the factory systems are known for hurting ets if engaged, a system that you have control over and is only active at launch might be benefitial.

I did this with my car to reduce the wheel spin via custom chip tuning.

I have explained that many times individuals will advance there timing via the distributer and turn a better time. When in my experience with tuning, they are just inducing knock counts and killing the power down low, which reduces wheel spin and turns a better ET.

To answer your question, YES it can be done effectively to help launch the car better. Look at my sig picture, the front end is nearly off the ground, and the tires are planted BIGTIME. :cheers:

Its going to be different for each setup, because of the TC, gears etc. I try to have all my timing in by max torque...but sometimes you have to sacrafice a little to do what we are talking about. :D
