Solid rollers and synthetic oil, o.k. to do
I would like to run a synthetic oil when I get the motor running again. I have heard that it is not a good idea to run a solid roller with synthetic oil because it is too slippery. I know it is ok with hydraulic rollers.
I saw a test in one of the car mags and they picked up 10rwhp and 6 rwt (400 rwhp area) going from dino oil to man made stuff in the motor, tranny, and rear. I already have it in the rear and can't use it in the tranny.
Any experiance on this, any solid rollers out there with synthetic oil and a bunch of miles. :auto:
Re: Solid rollers and synthetic oil, o.k. to do (69 N.O.X. RATT)
10w-30 mobile 1 syn. is all I have ever used. I tried a heavier oil, but my oil pressure was always pegged out cold and near pegged at anything over 3000 rpm hot. Right on the Crane roller lifter directions it said do not use oil restrictors with these SR lifters. Well I was year late in reading the directions!
I don't spend much time idling stopped in traffic. My car is an open road vehicle and the idle is 850 in gear and if I'm at a light I usually pop it into N and then the lifters are getting nearly 1000 rpm of oil pressure.
I think that good oiling is the key. My lifters have a wheel oiling grove down the side. but I saw a tool built to cut a groove on the lifter bores to keep the wheels oiled up

John, I would be careful with synthetic oil and nitrous. The pepole that built my motor said they have had bearing failures with synthetic oil and nitrous.
Now that was on 632 to 706 cubic inch motors making 1500-2000hp. I know the Ls1 guys run synthetic oil and nitrous.
I think Mountain Motor could help here.

why would there be a problem with synthetics? I could see a problem if cheap recontructed minerals were used or diesther based synthetics 9all same bonds, if one goes all go, like a domino effect) but a good quality polyester based sysnthetic has far superior lubrication and heat and pressure resistance over mineral oils.

I think it's because synthetic oil that gets past the oil rings and gets in the combustion chamber doesn't burn off completely like conventional oil. Thats a bad thing on nitrous and forced charged motors. It's called Detonation..
:)

69 N.O.X. RATT I could be dreaming this but a few years ago I thought there was a post on this and it was decided that synthetic would not allow the wheels to turn. There was not enough friction so sometimes the wheel just slid along the lobe. Like I said I could be dreaming this up.
Why not email comp cams and ask them is they recommend synthetic for their solid roller cams.
They would know.

Norval: I have emailed Royal Purple and a couple of other oil makers. I am going to email Comp also, the problem with them is sometmes when I call for a cam reccomendation I feel I know more about cams than their $5.00 an hour cam help. I have a feeling the same people may be answering the emails. I do not feel like risking $10,000 plus on that.
I remember the prior post you are referring to. If I remeber that post correctly a lot of the thought was therory. I am just looking for real world experiance like Gkull. I do not think he is having any issues with the roller sliding on the lobe, other wise he would have never got 15,000 miles out of it.
Just investigating all the options before I jump. :auto:

If you have that much oil getting into the combustion chambers you have other problems than the choice of oil.

Have 10,000 miles on my Crane roller lifters, just inspected them and no noticable wear. The oil has been Mobile 1, 15w50 for all of the miles except the first 500 miles, then it was Mobile 10w30 dino oil.
