Default cam lift for 406?

My builder says my 406 will need a .525 lift flat tappet cam essentially the same cam as the Hot Cam. Motor will have forged rods and pistons. Intake will be SR, MR or Stealth, but hopefully the Stealth. (I know 1.0" too tall, so I'm making own custom plenum)

Does this sound right? Heads will flow 230CFM/400, 250CFM/.500 and 275CFM/.600

I want max RPM of 6500 and streetable min 300 RWHP minimum mid to high to 12.xx's. I am trying to help keeps the temps down too!

Better yet,, any reccomendations for a relatively mild 406 build up?

Have you called Comp Cams or Cam Motion, or any cam maker for their opinion??

I have faxed them a cam reccomendation form but have not talked with them yet!

I wondered what others were running currently!

I'm running a Crane hydraulic roller with 222/230 duration @ .050. With 1.6 rockers, lift is ~.550" lift, with 1.5 rockers, it would be ~.520". It made 476 hp and just about 500 torque but ran out of breath around 5500 rpm. Very streetable (actually milder than the original L-82 cam), but I am wishing I had gone bigger.

Thanks, I was hoping to get to 6500 RPM tops but wonder if this is doable. The more I think about the RPM range 6000 RPM would be reasonable and OK with me.

I keep saying this will be a mild motor but every part I will be buying is making the motor to be pretty stout. Forged 6.0 rods, forged flat top pistons, 215CC Canfield or 215CC AFR heads (worked over 210's), headers and a Stealth or SR top side.

I cant wait to talk to these guys I hope tomorrow.

I'm looking at for 6500 RPM max goal with 220cc AFR heads (if they ever get here, been on order over 8 weeks now and counting) running a 250/258* @ .050 and .630/.630 lift cam. Motor at present has 235cc Pro Action heads and a 270*/.670 cam and was dynoed at 600 HP.

74vetteman, I've got that cam for my 420 build. I heard it idles pretty smooth, can you confirm that? I chose it because it would pass emissions. What kind of induction are you running?

I just replaced the cam in my 406 with a Comp XE-284 and 1.60 rockers. No problem hitting 6000,probobly more once I tweak the timing and carb. I had the XE-274 in before this and felt I ran out of rpms too soon. This cam is a bit grumpy at idle if that bothers you, stick with the XE-274,which was much smoother.
