Default 383 OWNERS , cast or steel who has what?

I know this is dependent on RPM and Money, whom has what cast or Steel?

Is steel an absolute necessity? I will not be turning more than 6000 RPM.

You can buy low end forgings from Scat or Eagle for much less than $500. either in 5140 or 4340 steel. From what I've seen and understand. Get the crank setup for internal balancing so you don't have to run a balancer and flywheel/flex plate as a matched set.

I am installing a Scat 9000 cast unit for the one piece seal block. It is supposed to be able to be internally balanced. I am having the machinist balance it when the rods and pistons arrive. I got the crank from flatlanderracing.com who drop shipped direct from scat. I paid only $200 for the crank. Everyone says these cranks are good to at least 6500 rpm and higher depending on the weight of the pistons and rods.

I remember seeing somewhere a comparison of strength between cast, the scat 9000 type cast, and forged. The 9000 series was just a little less strong then forged while the cast was a lot less strong then either.

Chris

From what I've read, this is the order of strength, from weakest to strongest

-Factory cast iron
-Scat cast steel and factory forged 1053 are about equal, with a new factory forged maybe a little stronger
-4340 is strongest

There are some other alloys out there, but these are the most common. There is some debate whether 4340 non-twist forging, or 4340 billet is stronger.

a few very very VERY bright engine builders have told me the scat 9000, cast steel crank can live at 800hp in a drag racing enviroment quite well. so far neither have seen one break on a SBC. i personally spin mine to 6900rpms & have never had one slight issue. i'm fairly confident this crank could spin 7500rpms & not have issues. internal balance is a must but they make it easy. now everyone kick me for not buying the 383 crank for $50 more.

I agree, I saw some rally good Scat 9000 prices at Flatlander.

Looks like a stroker is in the cards.

All I am looking for a real low 13's or high 12's car !

On pepboys tires! If you wanna know what else I got send me a PM, or drop me an email!
