Default "cooperative" state inspection in TX

I believe that discretion will be necessary for this post. I'm not implying, suggesting, or condoning doing ANYTHING against the law. Having said that:

I've got a '76 vette in a state of somewhat disrepair. However, I need to be able to drive it to get it around and get the work done that it needs. I've got it insured, so now I can get it inspected. Once it's inspected, I can get it registered. I may be stuck on the inspection part of it.
It was last inspected/registered in '04.

Are there any suggestions or resources where I could find a cooperative or friendly state inspection site in Austin, TX?
I would appreciate any answers, or even just hints, resources, or pointing me in the right direction.

I hope this post doesn't step on anyone's toes.
Perhaps sending a private message would be best.

Sad that we've become so politically correct/paranoid that one has to be afraid to ask a question around here.

I don't believe you need an inspection before you register the vehicle. Proof of insurance is required, but not proof of safety inspection.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the state of dis-repair unless the vehicle really is unsafe. If you have seatbelts, working horn, wipers and lights, decent brakes, steering and tires you shouldn't have a problem. If you don't, then you really shouldn't be driving it anyway.

thanks for your advice. I recall having gotten it inspected before, and the guy wouldn't pass it b/c he could feel that one of the cylinders wasn't firing correctly- he judged this by holding his hand just behind the exhaust pipe.

That should not keep it from passing an inspection. The inspection has to do with "safety", and now also emissions testing unless the vehicle is more that 24 years old, which yours is. Just take it, and if anything fails (like if there is an exhaust leak), then you'll have a few days to get it fixed and re-inspected without worrying about getting a ticket.

I would look into getting a registration sticker first though.
