To use an automatic trans coupled to the engine and with the output shaft connected to a torque arm, to work as an engine brake ? I would like to experiment building a home build dyno that way to lug the motor in order to do some tuning on my efi system.

Yes you could put a load the same thing as power braking a motor at the starting line.
