Default Serious upgrade for my '71

Guys, I posted earlier about a DZ302 engine that I had aquired. I have a thought. I have a company that I have done some computer consulting with in the past that does GM Powertrain development work. They work with delphi on ecm setup for crate motors and marine engines. They have two superflow dynos. I was thinking about switching that DZ engine over to a TPI manifold, adding a vortec supercharger and having them do the ecm. How much work is involved on swaping in a TPI engine into a C3? Will it clear the hood? What cam should I look into (ported 186 castings, 9:1 compression, 8-10psi boost)? I assume that someone has done something like this before. I would appreciate any input. Thanks! P.S. am I crazy for trying this?

Guys, I did some looking at flow rates and supercharger RPM. It looks like the Vortec V-2 SQ S trim is what I need. I also did some calling today to try and find a TPI intake. Is there any reason to look for a 350 manifold? Are the 305 and the 350 manifolds the same? I will probably be using new bigger injectors anyway, so no worries there. I was thinking about the 52mm BBK throttle bodies (780cfm). Stock is 48mm, right? I was also looking at the Comp. Cams 12-552-4 Nitrous/Supercharger cam. Desktop Dyno is putting me in at about 460-475. Does this sound about right? The car has a TH400 in it now, so with a little work it should be fine. Any potential problems with the IRS? It's based on the Dana 44, right? Any help would be appreciated!

Yeah kind of! Especially with the 302 .The money spent per hp will be way high.I cannot candy coat my dislike for the TPI but it is to each his own. Some really like modded TPI motors and I can see why. Some run very well!(no flames please!)To do that to your 71 though would be counter productive financially. But I have an idea.I send cash, you send the 71 and then go get a 85-up Vette to modify and all will be happy!
A blown TPI motor can make over 600 hp if I remember correctly. If I was to do this I would go big power for the same money.Check the TPIS site to see Dyno results
A couple of years ago I drove a 85 with a TPIS Blown 400ci motor. That 12k dollar motor was a crazy tire burner that's for sure

Dude a 302 is a high rpm engine . why would you want to saddle it with
a TPI ? TPI's typically run up to about 4800 rpm.
A DZ 302 never came in a Vette any way.
Maybe with a Mini Ram ... Maybe a turbo ... maybe it should go in a nice
69 Camaro with a cross ram dual carb :yesnod: :smash:

Cubic inches are the way to go. Build a 5.7 ot 6.0 inch rod 383 or 406.

I was just trying to think of something to do with that DZ engine. The bottom end on those things are pretty strong, and I hate to let it go. Also, I have seen a few people do the tpi conversion on a C3 vette and always thought that it looked cool. Also, I like the ease of an EFI engine. And, No you can't have my '71! I guess that I will re-think my options.

O.K. O.K Enough already!! J/K! I just bought a SCAT 9000 stroker crank for the '71. I got (with some advice) the 3.8" stroke crank. With a .030" bore and my 5.7" rods that will give me 388ci. I still have to pick up some Kieth Black pistons, but I will wait until the block is at the machine shop to buy those. I want to bore my orig. block as little as possible. Thanks for all your advice. And yes, for now I will keep my carb on there (Holley 750 that I am taking to Lars, also have a Edelbrock Performer Air-Gap non RPM that will be going on with the re-build).

Sorry mountain, didn't see that was you who had replied. I don't know what I am thinking, just looking to use some cool parts that I already have. Can't wait to try out that stroker! I got a buddy with a 2002 C5 auto convertable that I will go looking for!

Get some money out of the 302 by selling it over at the Camaro forum... Maybe someone wants to put together a first gen Z28.

Yea, I already have about six people that want to buy it from me. I just hate to see a good engine in my garage and not do something with it. I will probably just sell it and spend the money on the '71 anyway.

are you sure about the intake, the performer air gap is said to be suitable for lower reving engines, the RPM air gap is said to be more suitable for higher reving engines with more power...john :chevy

I like your attitude towards Dragon Slaying :)

jdune,
His manifold will work well with the cam and carb he has chosen. Those RPM's are really good manifolds down low if the heads are not the sewer pipe style.

I would like to see a back to back dyno comparison between the Stealth and the RPM.I bet it would be fairly close.
