I'm considering stroking my current ZZ3 up to 383 cid this Spring, but I wanted a lot of advice before I get in too deep. My first consideration is whether the extra cubes will make it harder to pass emissions (it cuts it kinda close right now).
Second, what will I be able to reuse from the original long block (rods, crank, etc) and what will I end up buying. IIRC, the crank is one of Chevy's better pieces; do I have it reground or do I need a whole 'nuther crank?. Will I have to: get different rods? Smaller base circle cam?
What would you recommend for a cam (it currently has the ZZ3 hydraulic roller, and I'd like to stay with a hyd roller. Is this one too tame for a bigger street motor? (208/221@ .050 .494/.510) As I said, this is strictly a street motor, and I'm mainly concerned with lots of low and midrange torque.
Right now, the engine also has Twisted Wedge heads (circa '95), Hooker headers, high flow cat, Stage II Quadrajet backed by a B&M 2500 Holeshot & 3:07 gears.

Well I never heard of the ZZ3 engine (only the ZZ4) but I figure its a 350? If so you need to get rid of that crank cause you need a 400. The rods need to be 5.7" I think and thats about all the parts you'll need. Someone else will most probably fill you in on this as this is a common mod.
The ZZ3 is simply the predescessor(sp?) to the ZZ4, I can't remember how the bottom end is set up, but I believe it was mostly forged components, I remember the older ones have beefier parts. If your really set on low down torque the stroker is the way to go, the only reuseable part in the bottom end will be the rods. I think however it would be a shame to throw out the forged pistons and crank for a negligable power increase, if you gonna tear up that good bottom end atleast take it out to a 396. However the one thing your engine is setup well for, which is cheap, and will give you ungodly amounts of low end torque, is a big shot of nitrous. :yesnod:

I went 12.89 at 110 on a ZZ4 stock bottom end. All you need is good ported heads, good exhaust, a good cam and a Super Ram to duplicate my results. I wouldn't recommend stroking unless you pick up some better aftermarket heads or get yours seriously ported out. You'll want the big valves 2.08 (int) and 1.6 (exh) minimum. You'll be disappointed otherwise.
