With $2k Suggestions 91 L98 that includes switching to carb. Looking for most hp. Non emmision
I have a 91 L98 block with very low mileage. Im thinking about going with a weiand low profile intake and a 650 carb (racing scca solo II so I need good throttle response). Now Im faced with what head / cam combo would work best for a strong mid range car. Total cash output o be under 2k. ( I have to also repaint my 37' motoryacht which is a HUGE pain in the wallet)
Looking for people wha have experience building a carbed L98 set up. Please don't make me re-create the wheel.

Hey Matt,
Im sure youll get other ideas from people who experienced doing these swaps, but was thinking about this conversion before myself.Didnt bring myself to do it though.
Do you know how much power youd like? The reason I ask, is for example, look at the ZZ4 crate engine.Makes about 355 HP in carb form with stock aluminum L98 heads and a ZZ4 camshaft.Thats not bad at all!
But For 2K you can get the stock heads ported/fitted with larger valves, better springs, etc and a better roller cam then the ZZ4 and push it closer to 375-400 ponies.
Thats the route Id go for under 2 grand if I wanted to keep the stock motor and not buy new high flow heads.
:)
Re: With $2k Suggestions 91 L98 that includes switching to carb
heres roughly what i spent so far:
holley 600= ~210
edelbrock performer=~130
holley red pump=~100
vac advanve dist=~45
misc gaskets, air cleaner, wiring and electrical=~100 to 150
total~535
that leaves extra for cam (mightas well do that while the intake is off.)
and good heads.

AFR (Air FLow Research http://www.airflowresearch.com/main.html) has heads that always are at the top in the dyno results, and the flow numbers for the new Pro Action heads (http://www.procylinderheads.com/) are quite impressive also. I'd give them both a call and see what they recommend.

Thanks guys,
The airflow reaserarch page is GREAT :yesnod: It has a lot of the info I am looking for. Now I just need to find out what intake/carb/airfilter combo will fit under my 86 hood. :chevy
Re: With $2k Suggestions 91 L98 that includes switching to carb (Red5)
i used an open element 14 inch diam 2 inch high cheapee air filter commonly found at checker, pep boys, auto zone. im currently modifying it to work with the stock air filter location, so i have to block off the filter and make the tubing mate up to the fabricated filter hoousing on top of the carb. this 2 inch high filter does fit under the hood with no problems. but i think there might be an air restriction with such a small filter. I have the K&n for the stock air box with the cut open lid and would rather use that.
Matt, I assume you're going to be in BP and not BSP right? If youre staying in bsp you have to keep the longblock stock. Me personally I'd stick with the L-98 top end, tpi and all.
1. LT-1 shorty headers used-10hp gain-$200-250 or LT if you can swing the extra $$$
2. smog pump eliminator 1 or 2 hp but 25lbs off the front end and $150delivered
3. afpr $50
4. true dual exhaust with no cats. Local shop did mine and removed all the cats, used 2.5" pipes. All for $160
5. I then added muffler elims which at least takes weight off. $50 installed.
6. Pick up a used set of L-98 alum heads from a 90 or 91 for $400 on E-bay have em worked over to the legal limit ;) (another couple hundred?)
7. Intake. This is up to you. I plan on going with a upper and lower superam. I allready have the lower($400+$75misc gaskets etc). I'm sure that if the LTR will net a few hp then the sr upper should be worth even more. Even WITH stock heads/cam. Plus, it'll give more useable rpm and thus, give the car 'longer legs'
If youre heading for BP then you cant do it on a budget and be very competetive. Heck, BSP is pretty exspensive. I know Danny Popp will swear up and down by the LT4 but an LT4 car didnt win the national championship year before last either. An L-98 did. Last year was kind of a fluke with the Datsun zcar winning and all. Everything got cut short a day because of sept11
Thanks for the reply. I race in the street racer division and I think they allow for all kinds of funny stuff.
Im looking for a carb, intake, cam head combo that will put me at a responsive 400 plus area.
Going carb and not looking back. The rest Im spending on tires/rims (already got) and springs/shocks (still undesided).
So Given the fact I amgoing with a set of canton 190 heads that have been flowed I now need to decide on proper cam (roller or not) and specs.
