So my engine is pulled, spun some bearings, cylinder walls are rough on two. Mechanic says bore it 30 over. My knowledge is limited, my budget is $6000. I'm looking to build an engine, and searching for recipes.
The block and car is a 70, base engine, 308's in the back, 700r4 for a transmission. I want to, within the year or so, convert to a Tremec 5 speed. I would like to stick with my small block hood for budget reasons, but that's not set in stone.
Sure the block matches the car, but I'm missing the tranny and plan on owning the car for a very long time, but sometimes life takes funny turns. In that light, I think a 383 would be the way to go using the original block, and not much else. A semi-matching numbers car if you will. I thought about the crate 383, but would rather straddle the fence if I can, and not store the block for some future collector.
Aluminum heads would be nice along with a hydraulic cam nice and lumpy... I live in California and 91 octane is the max I can run, but 89 would be great. Don't see much drag racing in my future, but I would like my car to be quick not just look it.
If a few people chime in, I would be most grateful. What would you do? Anybody have a pet engine they want to build and mind sharing?
Thank you for that link Tapio, I have seen it before a long time back and had forgotten about it. I think I'll post a couple recipes from there here, and see if people might chime in with some advice on where the last 4 years of advancement in heads and cams could take my engine.

I can give you a source i have used in the past.Nyes automotive.com -take a look at the 383 complete engine dynoed 500hp with intake, carb and dist.Shipped to your door and they do excellent work under 6000.Put your block in plastic and enjoy the new motor. You surely dont want to crack your block if you ever do have an engine problem and want to go back to stock.Ask for pat-he's the man.I dissasembled mine to check it out amazing machine work and everything was spot on.540 pump gas 737hp witha small carb 850 with plenty of room for more pan to intake-with starter dynoed and shipped for under 10,000.And not cheap parts-dart block dart heads cncd. You wont be sorry just call and talk with him.By the time your done rebuilding your motor and with aluminum heads your gonna have 5-6 in it anyway, with no dyno and tune.
