Default Cam install - Does intake need to come off?

If I am doing a camshaft install on a LS2, do I need to remove the intake if I have the correct tool to lift and hold up the lifters?

I am quite certain that you don't. I believe that the LS engines have a lifter retainer that holds the lifters up in the block, allowing the cam to be slipped in and out without messing with the manifold. After you have relieved the spring pressure from the push rods, simply rotate the camshaft to bump the lifters up out of the way of the cam lobes.

RACE ON!!!

agreed. I used the 5/16" wooden dowels from wally-world and oiled them up for some added insurance.

I did the swap on a new LS1 Trans Am several years ago (2000), and didn't remove the intake (you can't get the lifters out with the heads on anyway) or use any special tools to hold the lifters up. I didn't waste any time sliding the new cam in, though...my buddy was holding it, and as soon as I handed off the old cam I slipped in the new one. The dowel trick is good insurance, didn't think of it at the time.
