Default NGK Iridium Spark Plugs

I have read a lot of good things concerning the NGK Iridium spark plugs in performance engines. Many are running them is race motors....Has anyone used them in a high performance C2 Big Block? And with MSD Ignition?

I run them in mine with all MSD components

NGK does their numbers backwards from others when it comes to heat range....... their hottest is a # 7 and I would not go any colder for an 11.2:1 BB like mine........ plus I am seldom in traffic

For any stop and go driving NGK recommends their normal tip plugs over the V series

I've been using CHAMPION RN14YC. Which NGK's are you using or thinking about? Thanks

Shurshot - The NGK heat ranges are not reversed. Their hottest to coolest plug ranges are from 2 (HOT) to 11(Cold).

7 is a very cold plug range that is commonly used in motorcycle engines. Most run 5's on the street.

Are we talking NGK plugs as a whole or just their V series plugs...... seemed to me by your original post you were only speaking of the V series racing plugs that in the information made available to me start at a 7 for the coldest one .........that is borderline "to cold" for an 11:1 motor on the street..........

Hi Shur - I was inquiring about the Iridium IX plugs, not racing plugs. I wouldn't run racing plugs on a car that is street driven.

I have installed the Iridiums in my BB and there actually is a difference in perfomance...The motor idles about 100+ RPM faster now and it is a smooth as silk. Mine is a 11:1 BB with aluninum L88 closed chamber heads, a solid cam with 262@.050 duration, MSD ignition and modified tri-power carbs. I run 18 degrees initial advance and the cam loves it.
I have no pinging and motor shuts right off. I run 6 heatrange (Street plug)

I spoke to NGK before I bought them and they said that many racers are using the iridiums also.

Try em youll like em.....

I have not tried them, but my tuner had a C5 come in with the iridiums in it. He dynoed it then put the regular NGK resister plug in it and gained 30rwhp......After hearing that I stayed with the resister plugs

Wow

And with no other changes or motor temperature differences?

All they did was change them out and dyno it again, same day.......They changed nothing else. I don't know if it was a fluke the first pull, but it was enough for me

I heard that they put in the performance hood seal and gained another 20rwhp. You just never know. Here's your sign.

I dyno motors at work. I have heard the same BS about Platinum plugs loosing hp. IMO - If the plug is the correct heat range, indexed the same, non resister, and gapped exactly the same, the tip material does not matter.

I use Bosch platinum 4 tip in a couple of my cars and Autolight plat in my racing vette

I finally got my motor running again and it is running much better now with the regular resistor plugs in it versus the R5671A-7 iridium that I used before. However I cannot say that the plug change gets the credit because there were some other changes done while I had it torn down. All I can do is after I get it installed is one day switch back to the irdium plugs and see if there is any difference.

I did not change the plugs for a HP gain but for part of the break in time for the rings to seat that would include some "easy driving" and because it used to run on the rich side . However while was I wondering on what change made it run so much better I remembered this thread
