I just got back from Orlando Speed World...raced the Sat. night brackets in the Sportsman class...tonight was the "Agony and the Ecstacy" all in three runs...
I got my first time shot at 4:30 PM or so...air temp 90*, humidity 88%, track temp 129*...usual racing weather down here...ran a 13.595 with a 1.924 short time on a dead hook...my second time shot came at about 5:45 PM...air temp 89*, humidity 89%, track temp 127*....ran a 13.594 with a 1.924 short time again!!!!...
At this point I'm thinking WooHoo, here we go!...I'll be kicking some serious bracket butt tonight... ...they call us for our first round of elims at about 7:15 PM...at this point the air temp has dropped to 81*, humidity is up to 92% and the track is a lot cooler....the air pressure in my DR's is down to 27.5 from the 28 lbs. I started with...I dial 13.55 since my LT 1 likes the cooler air a bit...then I see my opponents dial which is 15.70....I change my dial to 13.60 with the thought of catching him a bit quicker and doing a little fender racing...
I do my usual burn out and we stage...he takes off and I'm waiting for my lights to drop...they do and I hit it like always...immediately the most bizarre thing happened...I went up in smoke and the wheels started hopping.. ..I had to get out of it and, by the time I got back in, the race was over...I closed on him but trapped at 13.78 with a 2.09, 60'time... ...
The bizarre part is I've had the DR's on for 2 months now and have NEVER spun..dead hook every time with tire pressures from 26 to 28 lbs....when I heard that familiar street tire squeal I literally was in shock...the only thing I can figure is I hit a bare spot or some fluid on the track...
Anyway, I had a great time, c5man99 came to watch and we got to see some serious bracket racing in the Quick 32 class...they had a bump of 9.33 and the low qualifier ran 6.71...one Vette in the field, a 65 who qualified 17th with a 7.78...good stuff...
Ah...Dan, that is because you usually run at BMP, OSW usually starts to go away early on from my memory. Good job though...I would not have been surprised if you would have went rounds if not for the traction issues.
Yeah..yeah... :p: ...I haven't run the AC in my car since the last time you raced...what is that, a couple of years ?...
Seriously though I think Tracy and Olivier are correct...there were 4 classes running and they all got in 3 time shots...the track didn't so much as look at the VHT the whole night after the initial prep...that's Orlando Spin World for ya.. :mad ..btw, I only got 2 time shots because when I pulled up for what I thought was the first round of Elims they told me it was the 3rd time shot and the staging lanes were closed...
I thought about dialing a lot higher but my opponent was a very experienced racer with a very consistent truck...the sun had gone down and the conditions had changed quite a bit..cooler air and track...I felt my car might well go 13.50 on that run so I thought a 13.60 dial was plenty in the bank..oh well, you can't dial for spin anyway... ...btw, he cut an .012 light on me, not that it mattered...
