Default Cruise In IV Drag Racing Results

32 competitors made it to start the 1st round. When all was said and done, Mean Green 2000 stood above all the become the official CI-IV Drag Racing Champion.

My 95(Ken) was the runner up.

Both Mark and Ken have come a long way since they've started racing and the effort they put into it shows.

Beech Bend treated us very well.

We had a few serious machines there. Turbo Vette(Mike) came from Canada to show us how his turbo Buick vette runs.

His first pass was a 9.84@140 mph, his second run was 9.95@141mph. That thing cooks!

Lou Gigliotti also ran his C5R. He wasn't prpared to run a Daytona prepped road racer, but he put on a good show anyway. 1st gear took him as far as 95mph, he managed to cross the traps at 135 mph(or maybe it was faster,I'm tired). I have a video of the run. Even with those tall gears he was spinning all the way down the track.

Dr Evil(Russ) took home the trophy for the best burnout in his 96 LT4 coupe.

The other two competitors were Mark(Mean Green 2000) and Steve(All THrottle & No Bottle) all three put on a fantastic smoke show but in the end the audience selected Russ as the winner. I have videos of all three competitors.

I was expecting a higher car count for eliminations, but it was a good day, we had close to 100 cars show up for time shots.

Drop Top Dave wins the prize for the most smiles in one day. It was his first time at the track, he managed to get in 24 runs. He didn't want to leave.

This is what makes the Cruise In so much fun, it gives many the opportunity to try something they have never done before. I think we have a few more addicts to join the club.

Can't wait till next year.

Why do people run time triles but won't run the eliminator????

I don't understand that, maybe some one who did just that can tell me why.

I wish I had an answer. This year for teh first time they allowed timeshots between rounds so more people would stick around. One thing I've noticed at the Cruise Ins, it's hard to keep people around for the end of anything.
At the banquet last night 90% of the people left before Adam and Larry was finished with the auction and presentations.

Frank did a great job helping to set up and run the eliminations, burnout contest and just about everything else. You NE guys better take care of him. We're working on him to try and get him to move down here :D

I dont know why paople will run timeshots but not elims. You cant win if you dont get to the starting line. Ron [98Pace97Coupe] and Liz [Ohyealiz] both entered and had fun. I think Liz even made it to the 3rd round or so. I was a left lane, 1st round loser with a 13.48 on a 13.40 dial. I got spanked hard at the tree

Thats to bad. I lnow the organizers put alot of time into this event and do a super job, you would think out of respect they would stay to the end. It's not like they do this every weekend.
I agree you need to let the non racers make some passes. This is how the CORVETTE CHALLENGE series has grown.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't know of anyone who tries Drag Racing for the first time that didn't come back to race again.
I think next year Frank you need to do something to get more people to race, we can talk about that. I have some ideas.

Maybe because all they want to do is see what their car can do and bracket racing isn't for them?

Ya, your right. Most people think Drag Racing is easy and it is if all your going to do is drive your car down the track to get a number that doesn't really mean anything. I think alot are afraid to barcket race when now they have to cut a light and run a number and get to the finish line first witout going to fast. I can see wher they would be imtimidated.

:iagree:
I had never run a car at the strip before trying it at a Gathering a few years back. While a bit nervous, I found that it was an exciting thing to do -- we had a great time racing Grand Sports against each other.

When it came time for the bracket racing, I retired the car to watch. Why? I didn't have any idea what the rules/courtesies were and there wasn't anyone around to tell us rookies how things worked.

It's nobody's fault but my own since the rules are extremely simple. But, the thought of facing experienced drivers and potentially doing something stupid kept me out of the bracket fun. The third year of attending the Gathering, I got sick of watching and tried it -- had a blast. Got tossed out in the second round because I went a lot faster than my dial (and had no idea that was a bad thing!).

How about setting up a very brief Driver's meeting over by the tech area where Lingenfelter used to do his drag racing tips session? Work with the PA announcer to encourage those who have never tried competition to learn the basics during this session.

Have someone do a brief, organized talk about common courtesies, staging, burnout preps (why do it and do I need to do it with street tires?), timing lights, bracket basics, safety, etc. Encourage newbies to ask questions and enthusiastically answer every one. I would think this would be a 15-minute session followed by 10 minutes of questions.

It's all about making people feel comfortable about doing something in front of a crowd. If someone had taken the time to put together this session at the Gatherings, I would have been having fun on the track 2 years earlier!

There just isn't a better place to learn the track ropes than at a Corvette event at Beech Bend. It's a friendly crowd and all the drivers will work to support each other. Making it fun and passing along your passion to others during a brief Drag Racing 101 session should help fill the staging lanes.

My $0.02.

Brad

Well put and I feel there are many just like yourself that are willing to learn. I think your'll find most of the older racers are more than willing to share their knowledge with others. Tis is a big reason why the Corvette Challenge sreies has been so successful and is growing nation wide. We invite new racers and will teach them the ropes and some of oue students have been very successful, just look at Edgar. I wish more would fell like you and just give it a chance , it can be alot of fun.

1. As mentioned, you just want to see what your car can do in the 1/4 mile, 1 or 2 time trials is enough for that. (I did this a number of times at Etown before staying around for eliminations.)

2. Especially at BG: You have driven your vette 500, 700, 1000? miles there and have the same distance to go home. Don't want to push your luck by thrashing your car too much at the track. (I know, one guy made 24 passes, and others thrashed their vettes at the burnout contest, but not wanting to break is a consideration).

3. Don't want to offend the serious experienced racers by beating them! Some of these guys take their dragracing SO SERIOUSLY they just go nuts if a rookie gets lucky and beats them.... or maybe they redlight and lose! It's just not worth the aggravation!! MJ

Well this is my point, these guys drive hundreds even thousands of miles. They have no problem doing burnouts(massive ones that destroy tires in seconds)at the hotel parking lot or in front of the museum, they have no problem blasting around corners and losing control. They have no problem racing on the highway, but when it comes to simple bracket racing or even time shots they don't want to do it.

I myself am guilty of all of teh above(except the losing control part.

I drove 850 miles down and 850 back. I did many many clutch frying and tire smoking burnouts. I made time shots in three different cars. I bracket raced and lost 1st round(to a road racer), I had a bunch of fun. I chose not to participate in the burnout contest this year for various reasons which I will mention later.

My point is that some people are not afriad to thrash their car on the street where it is illegal and dangerous, but when it comes to teh track, they remain hidden.

Now that I've got off track of the original subject, let's get back to Mark and Ken.

As Mark mentioned he ran a 12.851 on a 12.85 dial. Ken was dialed at 13.90 and ran 13.89, I think the race was won at the starting line with Mark having a .10 advantage on the tree.

Hopefully if Mark or Ken reads this again, they can post the timeslip, it was a very close race.

Congrats again to the winners.

since Ken broke-out it was over at the end....had he not, he would taken it as his RT was a .630 to my .650...had he run just 9/1000 slower he woulda won, had I run 2/1000 quicker, I woulda broke out ....full slip with mine on the right:
