Default Dumb Question ??

I know this not DR related, I didn't want to ask in the Wax section... :(

I was watching the Indy 500, & my neighbor came in & we were talking about rules... He said he heard on TV that there was a rule in Indy that "limits the RPM" they are allowed to turn.. He thought it was 8300 or 8500..

I never heard of such a rule but he was SURE he heard it.. Does anyone know for SURE, or if not where can I find out..

I'm not sure if it was Indy, F1, cart or what. I don't know much about those car but in one of those didn't they used to or still do not have any valve springs, but instead use nitrogen instead of valve springs, thus making them cars being able to turn such RPM.

I cant speak for INDY cars.. (thats why I'm asking) I am sure they ARE capable of wayyyyy more than 8500 but I heard they were limited to that by the rules ?

I just read where the F1 cars are turning over 17,000 RPM !! If you listen to an F1 car, then listen to an INDY car right after it, the INDY car sounds like a Diesel..

I know in Comp the small CI Chevy's are going through the lights at 11,00+ rpm in some classes..

Default Dumb Question ??

F1, NOW you're talkin'!

Juan Pablo Montoya at last year's Monza race in Italy qualified with the first ever F1 engine to click 19,000 revolutions per minute(and took the pole). Typically in race form, they can spin up to 18,500 or greater. It is one sweet sound!

I was surrounded by nasty race small blocks all day in the rain at Lime Rock. You can't beat the sound of an american V8. :steering:
