Second week in a row, I break a rear on the first time trial run off the trailer  !
Last week I killed a halfshaft, hub & dogbone just off the line, but I did have a .505 bulb!
This week I rip the D44 housing in half & break front of the carrier off the
C-beam :mad , didn't move far enough to get a RT!
Twice I haven't even made it past the tree :( , somebody trying to tell me something  ?
I think it's time to hang up the helmet for this season & start collecting 9" parts :cuss .
Dave - Sorry to hear about the damage again. It's the huge torque that is killing the rear. I would step up to a turbo 400 and Ford 9". That's what Keith Browlee has and he runs high 9's.
I'm working on it ......... I hope to have a semi functional piece by this weekend if time permits.
Quick question, what does it usually cost to completely build the stock unit and is what HP level can it take after that.
I seem to see lots of guy's out there that blow them up regardless of what you do to them. :smash: Thats the whole reason for my design to begin with. http://www.RPMdragracing.com
Frank, from what i've observed: a d36 is good for about 1.7x 60s and as you approach the low end of that range it becomes hit or miss (particularly with taller gears). The d44 seems to handle 1.6x 60s pretty well (me not withstanding). I've seen them handle 1.5s pretty reliably too, but one should expect failures every now and them. I've seen d44's handle 1.4s (even 1.3s), but i think you're asking for trouble (right Dave). The weird thing about them is they are totally hit or miss. Vic broke both 1/2 shafts in the water box doing a burnout with a stock L98, yet i've seen Speedwayracing go 1.35s on a nitrous feed 406. Phil (LT401) regularly goes low 1.5 or high 1.4s without failures, yet i've broken mine twice this year with 1.60s so go figure. I dont think they like enigines with high low end torque (like superrams) and I know they really dont hold up the clutch drops very well....just ask wheelsup.
Replacement costs are about 200-250 for a stock rebuilt posi unit. I just paid 450 for toms top of the line unit. But when these things fail they usually take a lot of other stuff with them. ujoints are about 25-30, used 1/2 shafts are about 40-50, spindles are 100-150 depending hardening process, bearings are around 150. labor to install the whole deal is about 500-750 depending on how much has to be done. I've sent about $2000 on mine in the last two years (not including the initial cost of the D44 conversion).
Being that I'm not yet an advertising sponsor (trying to work that out now) I cant in all fairness to this site and it's owners and sponsors divulge too much as to what I'm about to bring to market.
My recommendation is that you page "John Mackey" and ask what is in the works, he's in a much better position to speak on this issue
BTW, your gunna love this thing...................... :D :chevy
broke my rear/shafts and drive shaft first time out 2 weekends in a row
