I believe youre not supposed to change it once you come around the wall. But... I believe only the front two pairs under the tower are in the Raceway computer already. If you're 3rd pair on back, you're really safe to change your dial given a long oil down. Best bet would be to ask the track official standing down there if you're any closer and going through a delay. I'm sure Raceway would be understanding in a situation like that.
none of the above....for most places when you pull across the line at the front of the staging lanes, if no line then id say when you pull up to the burnout box you better be numbered up and ready to race. now if your in burn out and their is an oil down you would probably be able to talk to the starting line official and have them change your dial in but to be fair i'm sure they would tell your opponents what you were doing.

you cant change your dial for a rerun so I dont know about sympathetic officials.

This question has 2 answers. I know this as a fact.
Once you drive around the wall, you cannot change the dial in. Some tracks have a line on the ground.
As you mentioned about an oil down: If there is an oil down, you need to speak to a track official as I did on Sunday. It was late and there was an oil down. My ET did drop by .01 from waiting. I asked an offieical and the tower checked ont he ruling. The answer was that the other racer that you are racing will also be able to change his dial in too. I did not change my dial in thinking I would hold .01. Sure enough, I dialed a 11.39 and I ran a 11.38. This is the run I went -.001 red.

This is the official ruling on this question.
This may be the official ruling(drive around the wall no dial change) but it is unenforceable nobody is in that area to enforce that rule.I was always under the impression that once under the tower and stopped by the lane guy and your dial is recorded then your dial is locked. As you drive around the wall nobody checks to see if you have a dial on your car they check when under the tower as at that time it is put into the computer.I don't see any advantage to changing your dial frpm around the wall to under the tower.you can't even get a good look at the track from that area.A dial change in that area how does it help-hinder???Am I missing something??

You're missing your opponent. If you're racing me and violate the rule I'll have you DQ'd.

Are you kidding? You think me and 5 other guys that play by the rules will let him change his ET and not say anything? How about a cell phone camera? Would a photo prove it?

So you're straped in your car, helmet on ready to go. The other guy gets out his car, you don't know why, he wipes his dial off and quickly writes another one on. At what point are you jumping out of your car with cell phone camera? Maybe he knows he's not suppose to do it at that point maybe he does'nt, your going to march up to the tower and ask for a win based on a technicality?
And who are the other 5 guys watching this happen? Are you going to gather all the witness out o their cars and go upstairs or wait till after the race to see if you won or lost before filing your appeal?

Weather change during a long delay.
Racing me, and I see you change your dial in after the wall - we will have an issue.
DA was dropping like a rock and the Hum. was rising fast.

Your dial is not allowed to be changed after you drive around the wall. When you are under the tower, your ET is entered in the computer. If you change it after it is entered into the computer, it will not change in the system. You maybe DQ'd. The guy working under the tower does not deal with any BS.

What issue? Most people probably don't know rule and have never thought about it. When we get a good turnout and have 75 cars, more then half those people are just there to have fun and may not be all that competitive. (of course im thinking corvette challenge here, not some of those high dollar events with seasoned pros) So back to the point... One of our number one drivers who has more runs in a season then most have in their lives is going to give some dude licking his finger and sticking his finger in the air a hard time becuase he want to move his dial?
what about the cars that the dial is not legible for example my car if i put my window down it sometimes wipes the number partially off ,i have seen many many times the tower ask for clarification of one's dial the lane guy ask's your dial and he writes it on the window or someone just plain forgets this i have seen many times again the guy under the tower puts in onyour car should they be DQ'd?? they never have been nor do i think they would be,again the only time I have seen RP be concerned about your dial is when it's entered into the system.Again unenforceable picture or no picture and RP is not gonna assign a guy to watch for dial changers and youre not gonna get DQ'd on somebodys say so as it becomes "he said..she said"The only reference to dial I have ever seen at RP is to have your dial on left window where tower can see and before stage make sure your dial is correct on scoreboard.and what the big deal is if theres an oil down the guyswaiting behind the wall can change dials and a car 10 feet away can't ? Every track i have raced at it's always once directed or proceding to water box thats the cut off and at RP that would be coming from under the tower as directed by the lane guy.
K-Ripper, you asked a question and it was answered. Then you asked another question and it was answered. Looks like all you want to do is argue. Try changing your ET after you swing around the wall and see what happens. Bye bye.
Rob, it's a waste of time. He has raced at many tracks and he knows.
Web-Air, you really want to disqualify one of amateur racers becuae they don't know the rule about where the line is that they have to have a dial in on the car? And Ripper is right, I have seen plenty of drivers have the staff put dials on somenes car after they are under the tower because they forgot. They're just suppose to send them down the return lane, thanks for coming have a nice day? Sorry but thats lame!
Do you read the rule book for every track that you go to? How would you feel if you got disqualified for something obscure at a track you have never been to?
You just keep an eye out for all those nasty rule breakers in our AMATUER race class. Maybe you can pick up a few cheap ones.
Well the rule(s) are pretty clear - you are supposed to be strapped in helmet on ready to race going around the wall.
With that said, a person required to have on a jacket or suit and 5 pt harness is not going to be able to hop out and change the dial as easily as a competitor that only needs a helmet on.

I race at tracks all across the country. One of the first things I ask is where the cutoff is for the dial. That's very important and all racers need to know this that run brackets.
You think that rule is unfair? YOU decide what rules are fair and which ones aren't? YOU decide what rules you'll follow and which ones you won't? Is that what you're saying? Maybe you drive a 14 sec car and it's 100 deg that day. You don't need long pants, right? You'll wear shorts. Oh, wait a minute. You're a new guy and didn't know the rule and didn't bring long pants. Do you really think the track will let you run? So are you the guy we go to if we have questions regarding the rules? I thought the rules were for everybody, but I guess new guys are exempt. Have I got this right?
If we're paired and you have a problem that can be fixed I'll wait on you. If you break any rule, as Rob said, we'll have an issue.
BTW, I don't need to pick up a cheap one. And we're all amateurs.
The question posed by the original poster is moot, because it is stated on the website rules section. But it does not say you will be DQ'd, imply says it must be on before the hole in the wall.
If you race at tracks all around the country, you are alot more serious then most of the racers that come to our events. If I drove to Island (hour and half for me) where I have never been before and violated their equvalent rule do to my ignorance and some body ran upto the tower and got me DQ'd. I would be pretty pissed off and may not be so inclined to race with those individuals.
Sorry but your pants analogy does'nt work becuase thats a safety issue, and it would be the track making that call not some competitor going crying to the tower asking for a win.
I don't care if somebody wants to change their dial against me. What someone with a weather station that already has them dialed in to the hundreth wants to fine tune in the the one millionith? Knock your self out!
I see it as unenforceable. "Oh I was'nt changing my dial. I just wanted to make it more clear for the tower" Again my word vs yours can't prove it. If the track don't have it in computer, nobody knows.

I think this rule is for the benefit of track operations not necessarily a competive equalizer. The track wants you strapped in your car, with a dial and ready to race when you come around the wall. They don't want people running around changing their dials right up to the last minute because it could cause confusion and delays. I really wouldn't care if someone changed their dial after we came around the wall as long as I had the same opportunity and as long as i knew what it was when we were under the tower. If this rule were strictly enforced, then it would behoove drivers to wait until the last minute to come around the wall, particularly if the weather is changing quickly and there's a possibility of a delay.
btw.....what is considered "coming around the wall"?? Front edge of the car?? front tire?? entire car???
