Here is some very cool old footage from the popular Long Island tracks:

Not sure but it was a long time ago. I'm sure it was due to the same old reasons, noise ordinances, complaining neighbors and real estate speculation/development.
I know Westhampton closed (in late 2004) for those reasons.

Hmm, is this the Springfield in south Jersey (Burlington County) or the Springfield that I'm typing from this very moment (Union County)...I'd be shocked if there was once a drag strip/race track in my town.

FWIW 75-80 dragway was re opened in 2009. Here is a link to it. http://www.75-80dragway.com/
Does anyone remember a track in southern WV called Grandview dragway? It was close to Beckley WV. I went to a test and tune back in 1979.

I raced & worked at Fairmont Dargway in the early & mid 1990's
but that was the extent of my racing in the Mountaineer State:
a friend used to tow his '67 Buick wildcat from Pittsburgh to Princeton in March, because they opened early, but I never made it there

How about Vargo Dragway in Perkasie.Pa. that's where I first saw K.S. Pittman's 33 ****** Gasser cool stuff for the day! I remember York U.S. 30 the Super Stock Nationals. They raced em 4 wide allready. Also sometimes when you were staged the lights on the tree would blink a few times and you had to pull to the side so a plane could land then re stage and run. First time I saw Dick Landy, Cecil Yother and Lew Arrington. Pipe could kick myself in the azz for not taking a camera along back then. But when you were a small kid who wanted to carry a camera around all day?

I raced there on the last day the track was open. Sunday July 27, 1980...
It was bowled over for the Townhome Community that was built atop of it.
The other track closeby,"Westhampton Raceway that went on to be Suffolk County Raceway, Long Island Dragway, and finally Motorsports Park" when Gary Chimeri took hold of it, suffered the same Noise and Town Ordinance fate, due to all the new housing that sprouted up on what basically was farmland for years before.

Some aerial shots of it closed, just before the teardown....

I can say that we are lucky around Dayton Ohio for drag racing because most of the tracks are still operating. Places like Kil Kare drag way, Edgewater, Tri State, and National Trails all with in 60 miles of Dayton run weekly programs. Were each track is built no developers wants the land due to the land being labeled as a flood plain. As has been said around here the land is only good for growing corn or to race on. The only track that did close is Pence's up by Piqua Ohio.

Stayed in North Little Rock, Arkansas for 5 weeks two years ago. What a experience that was in itself. Nice place just a little different than the northeast. I took a ride to George Rays to check it out. It cost almost nothing to race. George offered me to start up his hot rod. I didn't take his offer and asked him to take a picture with me. George was a nice man and offered the racers a place to go. George passed away recently.
