Default About to paint a die cast- help?

Hello again, folks. Some of you may remember I started a similar topic a while back, but now I'm ready to actually spray this sucker- it was a Maisto 96 red coupe that I'm trying to spray black rose to match my car. I want the paint on the model to have the depth of paint on a real car

I have the diecast stripped to bare metal. The plastic pieces appear to have the color molded in, though (they've been soaking in brake fluid overnight). I have automotive paint left over from when I had some work done on my 1:1.

For the questions:
-What primer do you guys use, for metal, and for plastic?
-I have a $10 Harbor Freight airbrush. What ratio should I dilute the paint?
-How many coats of paint, and how should I sand the paint between coats?
-What clear coat should I use, # of coats, and how do I sand between coats?

It probably seems like I'm taking this to a whole new level of obsession with the clear and all, but I have some neat plans for this car and some real tricks up my sleeve. I want the paint to be incredible, and match my 1:1. I can't wait to show you guys pics of the final project!

Thanks alot, guys!

1. Go to Walmart and pick up a can of "Sandable" gray primer as you will need to put on a coat, sand smooth with 600, another coat sand smooth with 800, and then last coat sanding with 1000 grit.
Car needs to have no flaws and be very slick.

2. Get a better air brush. Cheap airbrush equals cheap operation. Either buy or borrow a good doulble action air brush. Use psi at 20 to 30 lbs.
I mix paint and thinner at 60/40 ratio but sometimes less depending on the paint characteristics.

3. Spray a coat of Testors Model paint in silver over car. Deeper and slicker
paint can be done with five coats if applied correctly.

4.Shoot first coat and let dry and harden for 5 to 7 days. Wet sand with 1000 grit. Second coat same way and sand also. Third coat same again as well.
On fourth coat mix color and clear about 60 / 40. Do not sand but wait a few days for coat to harden. Last coat mix color and clear this time 30/70.
Let dry for at least a week.

I then will either wet sand with 2000 grit paper to make item smooth as glass or use Menzerna Intensive Polish. Finish with some pinnacle paint conditioner
and then I like using Pinnacle Paste Glaz.

Car should have the color you wanted plus depth and be absolutely slick.
Here are some examples of a Porsche I built.

Are all these initial coats of the silver ?? Eventually woring into the top color and clear??
Or is it a base of silver then multiple color/clear coats??

Base coat of the silver, then the five coats of color .
The silver will dry fast and will leave an even finish for the color to be applied over.

The clear coat is a mixture of color + clear!?!? I always thought that clear was JUST clear. Thanks for the detailed explanation. By the way, that is one HELL of a job you did on that porsche! What kit did you start with? I think there is a *tad* more detail to that kit than the Maisto I am starting with...

Thanks!

Mixing the color and clear on final coats add the knee deep effect of the paint.
Some people will take start with an 80% color to 20% clear and then each coat thereafter decrease color 20 % and add more clear.
I had a friend of mine that built a customized 70 Corvette ( real car, not model ) in a dark candy red. It had 20 coats of paint.
When he got to coat fifteeen he drilled and champhored small holes in strategic areas and embedded a real diamond. Then did the final 5 coats.
You could not feel the diamonds and it looked like they were floating in paint.
Cost a ton of money also.

The Porsche is a 1/12 scale Tamiya Model kit. You have to see it in person to
see all the detail.

These pictures just go to reinforce my belief that Exoto's are 1:18th Diecast
versions of 1:12th Tamiya kits.. Others have said it before and I have agreed
and it's so obvious! I swear I thought that was the Exoto 934 :)

Great paint work by the way! (And check out the pictures of my Exoto 934)
