I Don't Get It ???? Why would anyone pay that for something is not an original promo or otherwise? A plastic kit could be put together and look better than a promo. The UT Diecast is a work of art compaired to that. :jester
It is an original 78 Promo that has been custom built into a Pace Car. Price is up to $127.56. Hey, the auction speaks for itself. You can buy diecasts anywhere, anytime. You can't do that with this promo. Similar custom Indy Promos sell for over $300.
Add me to those who don't get it. This is just a promo someone took it on themselves to put a bad paint job on. It's not original or authorized. It look like how I used to paint up my old Tonka Toys when I was in junior high, except my paint was usually more smooth. If I take some other year promo model and put a different paint scheme on it, does that make it rare? I'm really not trying to flame anyone, but in my opinion the high bid price just proves how stupid people can get on Ebay.

Re: Check out this 1978 Pace Car Promo (Doughan)
If that is is fact an altered promo, it is worth NOTHING. I do get it. I have been collecting promos for several years and appreciate their significance to the industry in spite of the fact they are cheaply made pieces of doo. This one is exceptionally poor. It was worth more untouched. I also am not trying to flame, but seriously, if you took a ZR-1 low mileage and start ripping out parts and altering it, you are creating something you will appreciate, but is NOT worth more. I accidentally crushed a promo of mine, I think I'll make it a Callaway Speedster now and see if I can get it to quadruple in value. If It works, I'll change all of them and retire. As far as 1:18 cars, the good ones are great, the cheap ones are fun. Can't beat'em for eye appeal. I switched from promos for that reason. The Pace Car is a great example and the Collector Edition 82 is even better than that! To each his own,but I hope no one I know is silly enough to bid on a car like that. :seeya

Re: Check out this 1978 Pace Car Promo (Aerovette)
i agree with you aerovette. that '78 pace is a pretty poor example of a custom. as far as the ebay price, there are people bidding on things that have no clue on what they are buying. as once said, "...there's one born every minute." if that's truly an example of what custom '78 promos are worth, i'm going to start buying all i can get and let my 11 year old grandson go into the custom promo business - :D

Obviously not!
Ebay has had a leveling effect on a lot of markets. In spite of what experts like us might say, the market actually determines what's worth what.
Not too long ago, the cheapest Corvette promos were $30 and it only got higher from there. Ebay "helped" a lot of collectors find out that many years were very, very common and readily available so those can't be given away today...Good if you want them...Bad if you already have them.
On the other hand, it also helped expose the merchandise to a wide audience so that, as in this case, if there are two (or more) people that get their fancy tickled by a particular item then it can go through the roof.
In this particular case there were five people that all thought this model was worth over $100...See the "Bid History".
Another story...Shortly after the set came out, I bought the Ertl 3-engine set ('57, '67 and '97) for $19.99 at Toys 'R Us. I mounted the '97 LS-1 in a bell jar mount for my collection, put a wood base on the '57 fuelie and gave it to a friend of mine who owns a couple of '57 fuelies, and put a wood base under the '67 tri-power and put it up on Ebay.
It sold for $36 !
I was feeling a bit guilty until I heard from the winning bidder and he said he knew he paid too much except he liked the wood base I put on the model!
...and again, the second highest bidder obviously liked it too.

You think Ebay shows a particular item's "Fair Market Value" ?
"Fair Market Value" defined:
"The fair market value is the price at which the property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither being under any compulsion to buy or to sell."
Again, since at least TWO buyers have to think it's worth the money to bid up an auction...
Dis-agreeing with the price only means you're not the buyer. :yesnod:
Re: Check out this 1978 Pace Car Promo (Carmine97)
To try and put this to rest, let me just say a few things.
If you don't like it and don't think much of the promo, well that's your opinion and they're like armpits. But to crudely degrade it shows a real lack of class. So please go fly a kite.
I don't mind you expressing your opinion but some of the comments here are uncalled for and a blatant flame.
Re: Check out this 1978 Pace Car Promo (Carmine97)
Carmine,
I disagree with that asessment of "Fair Market Value" because there is
most definately "compulsion" otherwise we would never see these much
inflated prices. Ebay is a great tool that brings together many uneducated
buyers who have too much money, too much compulsion and too much time
on thier hands.
I have seen items sell time and time again for prices that are way beyond
the real world "Fair Market Value".
This modified pace car (which in my opinion would be wortless to a hard core
collector seeking originality) is only one example of many that i have personaly
bore witness too.
I think I know a bit about collectibles and ebay in general. My last Ebay
Auction was for a 50+ year old Lionel steam engine that was very desireable
and at the end of the auction damn near broke the $2000.00 barrier! :)
I am not trying to flame, but in my opinion Ebay is not about fair market value, its just an easy place to find a lot of stuff. Just last night I was browsing some Sharper Image auctions and for one item in the ad it had the suggested retail new as $49.99-the bid was at $71! We also have to remember that getting a bid and getting the actual money are not always the same. :chevy
