There was a Corvette Challenge series in the SCCA around that time. Chevy built a number of basically stock cars with safety improvements - cage, harnesses, fire system, special suspension, etc. Series only lasted several years before Chevy pulled the plug. The cars were fairly collectable and brought a premium about 10 years ago. Have no idea what they are worth today.

Never heard of them.
I've been racing SCCA and owning Corvettes for over 30 years and have never heard of a 1979 SCCA Corvette except the one-off's that individuals built, but nothing that there would have been 79 of. I think there was a #44 Corvette wide body running IMSA at that time. PM me some pics if you can and I'll try to help.

Here is the 88, 89, and 90 R9G cars info:

Just a quick look over and I did not see a #44 in 88 but in 89 they had a car #44.

Another great place to research is on the Registry of Corvette Racecars. Lots of good information over there:

I'm showing my age but I thought the number 44 in 1979 was synonymous with Jaguar.....Group 44. They ran the Triumph and Jag brands.
