When does SA2005 expire?

Every event I've driven that requires an SA certified helmet says they will accept one certified to the latest criteria or one certification period earlier.
Snell does certifications every 5 years.
The current period certifications were performed in 2010.
The previous period was 2005.
So....virtually any racing or track day sponsoring group will require an SA2010 or SA2005 helmet.
When the 2015 certifications are performed the SA2005 will no longer be acceptable to most track sponsoring groups.

So I guess now the question is when will SA2015 be certified? Google say SA2010 labels became available April 1, 2010 so was that when SA2000 was officially dead? Because there's no way you could have bought a 2010 helmet right on April 1st. This is weird.

Maybe I should just email Snell?
But then I searched a newfound term, SA2015 release date. This site indicates late October/early November.

SA2005 was released 1 October.

So if the release date of SA2015 is the expiration date of SA2005, this is good news.
SA2010 Effective Date
Certification testing to SA2010 is underway. SA2010 certification labels will be available to qualified manufacturers starting April 1, 2010. Helmets certified to SA2010 must not be available for sale until October 1, 2010.

The following is the projected release schedule for the 2005 Snell standards:
Final Draft Completion - May 31, 2004
Manufacturers may submit helmets for certification to the new standards any time after this date. Helmets meeting requirements for certification will be granted certification to the current M2000, SA2000 or K-98 standards as appropriate and will be granted certification to the 2005 standard as of the release date.
Release Date - October 1, 2005
The M2005 and SA/K2005 standards will be officially released on this date barring any unforseen complications. M2005, SA2005 and K2005 decals will be offered to certified manufacturers after June 30, 2005 but units bearing the new decals may not be distributed until the release date.

Check your rules for your racing organization. They are the ones who define what they will accept.
If I recall both SCCA and NASA will take SA2005 and newer.

I know they did for 2013 and no question for 2014 but I'm uncertain for 2015 if they will. If so, great, if not, I need to buy a 2010 helmet now and forget about this 2005er. That's why I'm at the crossroads.

General policy is to accept helmets up to 10 years of age as I recall in the GCR. Look at the rules for your racing organization.

I have this Pyrotect helmet (made in Bend OR). It's a 2010 rated and has replaceable cheek pads and you can get a variety of tinted face shields too
Although I wear glasses, the full-face design helps with keeping junk tossed up by the tires from hitting me in the face especially during track days.

The 05 is $100 (don't give me that $100 head crap unless you're buying me a helmet) and fits me well. I figure if it's good for 2 seasons, it's worth it and saves me a few bucks right now as I still need to get a HANS, new driver harness, couple sets of tires, and more brakes for next season. I also get to cough up for my annual dyno session and my annual comp license renewal now too, so every dollar counts. The car needs a few items to make it "fit" me better too. Unfortunately, the 2015 CCR won't come out until 2015. . .

I challenge anyone to find a study that independently concludes that $1,500 helmets protect better than $200 helmets. Those studies don't exist to my knowledge. There is another study I read some years back that concluded any helmet, if fit properly, protect properly and as good as other helmets. The same study with motorcycle riders found that something as minimal as a padded baseball helmet improved survivability in crashes.
My take away from the study is just wear a helmet, any helmet, as long as it fits right and is not damaged.
For me it comes down to good fit, comfort, visibility and ventilation/anti-fogging.
