Inside an F1 engine
Engine manufacturers are letting the cat out of the bag now that the engine rules have changed.

Maurice Hamilton did a nice, short bit on the recent history (1967 til now) of F1 motors.

The part I like:
"Pneumatic valve springs (introduced by Renault in the mid-Eighties) had accelerated the [performance growth] in every sense. The V8 would idle at 6,000 rpm, a speed that would have our road cars revving their nuts off. The V8 was soon up to 20,000 rpm. Had a 19,000 rpm limit in 2007, followed by 18,000rpm in 2009, not been applied, engine boffins say V8s would have been screaming round Interlagos last weekend at 25,000 rpm.
That's a phenomenal figure when you think about it. We're talking about 416 revolutions every second. I don't know about you, but my mind simply can't cope with that, particularly when you think of the potential mayhem being contained in that confined space when the piston reaches top dead-centre. And there's eight pistons, side-by-side, all going mental."

First listen to the 2014 Ferrari F1 power unit
They're not "engines" or "motors" anymore. They're now "power units" as the internal combustion component and the energy recovery systems are all integrated as a single piece (unlike the <= 2013 cars where KERS was really a separate thing.)
Anyway, here's what appears to be a "spy" video of the 2014 power unit installed for testing in the "Le Ferrari" (really Luca?) You can get an idea of the sounds it makes. They certainly weren't winding it up to anywhere near the 15000 rpm max but all the proper turbo back-pressure sounds are there. Get twenty of these things on track at once and the sounds will be just fine.
