Default cheap lead for ballast

Anyone know who sells the cheapest lead for ballast?

California tireshops no longer have lead wheel weights too many greenies in kali.

Shooting ranges are remelting their lead to make reload bullets.

Cracking open an old lead acid battery is just messy and nasty.

I need a 150 freaking pounds!

Thank You!

Scuba dive shop or exercise vest has lead weight pockets, but you pay retail.

E-Bay has been where I find the best deals. Shop for shipping options.

Also try searching under "ballast"

I buy from my local scrapyard. (Probably a law against that in Cali)

We used to buy lead "pucks" from the local plumbing supply store. They were roughly the diameter of a hockey puck and weighed 5-10 pounds each. 150 pounds is quite a bit. Can you weld a steel box together (like brick sized) and fill it with lead shot?

I bought mine from a maintenance guy for a local chain of gyms. They came off of replaced weight machines and already had holes in them to facilitate mounting. Very cheap.

At our shop, we keep all of the old lead tire balancing weights and sell most of them to a scrap metal guy. We also keep a supply of them for the guys who want weights for fishing lines or for reloaders who shoot wadcutters or for black powder guys.

All wheel weights now (clip on or tape weights)are a steel mixture with no lead in them. It takes a lot more pieces to balance tires now.

We had depleted uranium weights for the air force jets...

$hit was WAY heavier than lead...

I think they use that in some ammo at the business end. Armor pierce stuff to drill a tank & such.

Yes?

a definite YES on that one. Google APFSDS for more info. used by MOST NATO nations although most are switching to Tungsten rounds (used to be used for practice) now as lets face it there aren't many tank on tank battles in war now.

Also most commercial aircraft use it in the tail to help with balancing.

Post on craigslist and get plates for weight lifting. You can get 100lbs of assorted weights for around $20 here pretty easily.

I question the safety of workout weights with a hole in the middle. Today they are usually steel which is physically much larger than lead. Second is how do you properly secure it in the car so that it is not a lethal projectile in the car? In my case I will be fully ballast with 350lbs of lead for my race class. A simple 45mph crash delta is about 50gs! So a smart person would build for at least that level of wreck. That means the 350lbs of ballast needs to be secured for 17,500lbs!!! I see people bolt in brake rotors to the sheetmetal floors and I question the brilliance of that.

Just thinking safety. Could you sandwich whatever you use as ballast material (workout weights or whatever) inside the car between the floor and some type of plate so that is less likely to become dislodged? How is ballast traditionally secured? That's something I know nothing about and would like to learn more about it.

I use two rotors weight about 37 lbs total to make weight. I have them bolted through the floor pan, but I go through the mounting bracket that holds the seat OEM belts. I figure that is strong enough to hold 37 lbs, but certainly not 350 lbs.

10g's is indicative of a mild crash. The last thing you want are weights/rotors taking flight in a crash. Use many bolts, spread the load.

50gs is 1850lbs. Might be ok if your hardware is up to the task. Seat anchors designed for 250lb guy plus some margin of engineering safety. I have no clue. Need a real engineer not a chicken like me.
