Default Overview: Crane Cams V8 StockCar at the ARRC

The Atlanta Region SCCA is celebrating the twentieth running of the American Road Race of Champions at Road Atlanta on November 1-3, 2013. Road Atlanta, is of course one of the premier race tracks in North America and is a favorite of most road racers. The 2.5 mile circuit with its' twelve turns, incredible elevation changes, fast sweepers and high speeds will test the mettle of all who challenge it.

2013 will also mark the tenth year in a row that the Crane Cams V8 Series has concluded its schedule and crowned its' champions at the ARRC. Past V8 Competitors at the ARRC include; former Grand Am Champ Dave Machavern, 2012 Trans Am champ Simon Gregg, 2013 Trans Am 2 champ Cameron Lawrence, multi time IMSA champ Gene Felton, three time Nascar Goody's Dash champ Larry Hoopaugh, former Nascar Craftsman truck, Nationwide Series and Trans Am competitor Ricky Sanders and more.

Over the years the series has had a nice blend of racers, with hard charging, grizzlied veterans like Dave Machavern, Randy Walker, Gene Felton, Bill Smith, Squeak Kennedy, Scott Murphy, Bob Mayer, Bob Mitten, Willie Mullins, Jeff Emery, Larry Hoopaugh, Lee Arnold, Paul Breehne, Butch Kummer, Kurt Roehrig and more now starting to make way for talented youngsters like Dillon Machavern, Cameron Lawrence, Bobby Kennedy, Nick Hazelwood, Zach Monette and others. A number of the old guard is still around and still spoiling for a fight.

The Crane Cams V8 Series has four classes of exciting purpose built race cars with the fastest being the PORTERFIELD ENTERPRISES V8 GT-1 machines. These cars are similar and often identical to the Trans Am cars with their 800 plus horsepower motors, sophisticated suspension components, highly engineered gearboxes and downforce bodies. These car weigh only about 2800 pounds with driver and when matched with their powerful Nascar bred engines and fourteen inch wide rubber they provide shocking speed, incredible sounds, and pulse quickening excitement whenever they hit the track.

The LG MOTORSPORTS V8 GT-2 class is a blend of race cars including the highly modified stock chassis cars such as the C5 and C6 Corvette's that inhabit the SCCA GT-2 class, the ex Grand Am Koni and Continental cars, as well as the purpose built tube frame SCCA GT-2 types. These cars also have quite sophisticated suspensions, high dollar braking systems, lightweight modular wheels and sticky rubber. Most have between 350-500 horsepower and are fully capable of hitting 160 mph down Road Atlanta's long back straight.

The V8 Series has two classes of stock cars, the quickest of the two being the PITBOXES.COM V8 SPO cars. These are the ex Nascar Cup, Nationwide, and ARCA type stock cars with more than 800 horsepower and a race weight of 3400 pounds. Also eligible for the class are the late model stock cars often raced on short tracks around the country every weekend. These are about 2800 pounds with driver, with motors that are bit more restricted, to around 650 horsepower. The lighter weight keeps them competitive with the more powerful but heavier stockers.

In the great "bang for the buck" category are the HOWE RACING ENTERPRISES V8 GTA cars. These are 2800 pound with driver, purpose built tube frame stock cars with motors making around 500 horsepower. These cars use components that are off the shelf type from the circle track suppliers, which makes great value for the racer. The V8 GTA's race on spec 10 inch wide stock car rubber that is very affordable yet delivers impressive grip. These well built, safe race cars are capable of lapping Road Atlanta in 1:28 and hitting 160 m.p.h. down the back straight.

All four class point leaders for 2013 are expected to compete and they are:

V8 GT-1: Dillon Machavern, Machavern has been virtually unbeatable in 2013 in the Riggins Engineering built Falcon formerly campaigned by his dad, four time V8 Series Champ Dave Machavern. Young Dillon, just a college freshmen, has already won the Eastern conference SCCA GT-1 championship and looks to add the V8 Series title to his resume.

V8 GT-2: North Carolina's Randy Kinsland has a comfortable poins lead in his Sam Power prepared Corvette. If Kinsland has a solid finish, he will take home the ring and bring crew chief Power his fifth championship. Power was the crew chief for three time champ Bob Mayer and last year for Nick Hazlewood. Power is the only championship winning crew chief this class has known.

V8 SPO: Hilton Head Island, South Carolina's Tad Segars leads the class. Segars, driving the Kimrey Racing Monte Carlo has build his points lead on consistent finishes. Should Segars have trouble and not finish the race, Virginia's Willie Mullins in his super fast Ford Fusion could take home the prize.

V8 GTA: Two time champion Randy Walker has clinched the championship again for 2013, with six wins in six starts. The Kentucky native, driving his Walker Properties, Howe Racing built Camaro has been near flawless, leading most every lap and challenging track records each time out.

For the ARRC weekend the Series will have two points races with a short "qualifying" race where the class winners will take home 24 points and the ARRC Championship race where double points will be available with the winner taking home 48 points.

The V8 GT-1 race should be a barn burner with 2012 Trans Am Champ and multi time ARRC champ Simon Gregg (Derhaag Corvette) battling Eastern division SCCA GT-1 Champ Dillon Machavern (Riggins Corvette), 2012 V8 SC GT-2 Champ Nick Hazelwood (Weaver Corvette) and Zach Monette (Optech Monette) Mustang. While Gregg is a previous winner of the race and a former V8 StockCar GT-1 champ, he will likely still have his hands full as Road Atlanta is the home court for Hazelwood and Monette and Machavern has just been fast everywhere he has gone, with a professionals ability to quickly adapt to unfamiliar courses.

In LG Motorsports V8 GT-2 Randy Kinsland is the favorite in his CrossRoads Motorsports Corvette, but if Russ Snow (Corvette) and Jeff Dernehl and his wicked fast tube frame Mazda RX-7 show up this will be a thriller.

In Pitboxes.com V8 SPO Tad Segars and Jeff Hinkle will battle but both could be in trouble if Willie Mullins and the Bugsy's Automotive Ford Fusion show up.

The Howe Racing V8 GTA usually sees 10-12 cars enter and always near the front is Randy Walker (Howe Camaro) and Butch Kummer (Howe Monte Carlo). With solid performances over the years, but little luck, could this be the year it falls Kummer's way?

The Crane Cams V8 Series thanks the Atlanta Region SCCA and the ARRC committee for continually putting on one the best shows in Road Racing. We are proud to be a part of this great event.

The V8 series thanks it partners, and they are: Crane Cams, SCCA, Atlanta Region SCCA, Porterfield Enterprises, LG Motorsports, Howe Racing, PitBoxes.com, GoPro, RaceTalkRadio.com, Sunoco, Hoosier, Goodyear, FiveStar, RaceCar Engineering, RacingJunk.com, Roehrig-Enders, GrassRoots Motorsports Magazine, SafeRacer and Roush Yates Performance Parts.
