My roommate has a trailer that is very much like the one in this ad:

5280 and I want to put both our cars on it for a 6 hour trip to a NASA event.

My roomy thinks there is no way we will get the cars on without a fork lift.

I think if we ninja-fab some ramp adapters we can possibly do it. We are going to go look at it this weekend but before we do I thought I'd check if anyone else has already been through this before.

Thoughts?

It looks like it would be difficult to get the cars across the beaver tail hump. My beaver tail isn't that drastic and my car just clears by a couple of inches.

No way the Vettes clear this trailer (in link) from the ramps onto the bed. However the trailer should still work but you'll have to hire a tow truck tilt/flatbed. Drive vette on tiltbed, back that truck up to your buds trailer, drive it on. Obviously you'd have to do this on both ends of the trip.

You didnt mention what your vettes are, but if they are C6 GS, or Zs you will even still need some short 2x12s just to clear the splitter getting onto the tiltbed.

IF you extended the ramps long enough to get the car onto the trailer without bashing the nose, your next challenge will be the beavertail. I would look at Reverse Logic for some great solutions for that. My C6 is slammed and the center of the wheelbase grounds out on the beavertail. I talked to Fred at Reverse Logic who is a great sponsor here and he hooked me up with these:



You place them past the beavertail with the center of the ramp exactly half your wheelbase length in front of the beavertail breakover. When you drive it down, you place them exactly half your wheelbase on the downhill side. So as your car is about to bottom out on the beavertail, it drives up the ramp and increases your "ground" clearance. Hope that helps!

The only alternative is to lower the trailer with shorter tires and adjust the GN and rear ramps accordingly, but you run the risk of the neck not clearing the bed-sides (if applicable). That decreases the approach angle significantly, but doesn't change the beavertail break-over angle problem.

Put the trucks rear tires up on ramps or you get blocks of wood that will go under the stands for the trailer and lock it in the position it needs to be. Local guy here does it with 2 C5Zs.

Good info here guys. I'll PM ScreaminZ as well.

My C6Z is stock height but 5280s is on coilovers so it's a bit lower.

I'll know more this weekend when I go look at the trailer (it's in storage). If it's doable, I was thinking:

1.) Tow vehicle rear tires up on ramps
2.) Air down trailer tires near flat
3.) ramp extensions
4.) more ramp aid to clear the dovetail

I'll look at installing a winch on the bulk head of the trailer to ease the cars up.

It's a lot of work but cheaper than buying a trailer. Or driving my car there and having to tow it back if something goes wrong.

I am pretty sure the ramp issue can be resolved with 10 to 12 ft long ramps similar to what I use on my trailer. They need to be two pieces with the starting section at a lower angle than the section that bridges to the trailer. Measure from the center of the front tire contact patch forward to the nose of the car and that will give you the angle and length of the first section. Then as the wheels come on to the ramp the nose starts to pivot upward which allows you to increase the angle of the second part of the ramp.

I posted this in another trailer thread yesterday. The pictures show how my ramps work on my trailer. The only issue I have is I need to make the short first ramp a couple of inches longer and just a little lower on the high end to keep the Z's front splitter from rubbing the ramp. When originally built they worked fine for my 86.

The rear of my beaver tail is about 18 inches off the ground. The beaver tail on that heavy duty trailer will be another issue.

i have a single car hauler I won't be using that weekend. If between the 2 of you you limit yourselves to a single failure you'd be OK.
