gps lap timer question
If you are wanting a lap timer specifically for examining particular sections of the track (lap vs lap) to help analyze exactly what works best. what is the best solution < $1000?
I might add that I would like to add video to the recordings.
I forgot to add that this would be C5 specific.
I've been reading and reading. I think all I do is confuse myself even more.Is there any consensus about this?
TIA

For the C5 Harrys lap timer is great with the gopoint OBD plugin. OBD allows you to add RPM and Throttle position to the data, both great for breaking down sections of the track.

I'm really looking for something that does very high sampling rate so I can dissect turns and how I attack them, what works, what doesn't. I think the Traqmate may be the best solution for the money, but I'm still searching. I only have what I read on the web. lots of choices, very confusing

With a $70 external GPS antenna, Harrys Lap Timer will sample as well as a $600 dedicated system, and it can pull the OBD data. I run a Qstarz 10hz external GPS and it works great, you can see every nuance of your line on the overlays.

Is the data available on a C5? I was under the impression that much of that data was in a propriety format that couldn't be accessed easily. I understood that changed on the C6.

Based on my experience and some of the guys here on the forum, the advantage of a standalone system is that it will work every single time. There are no wireless components or external power to mess with when you are trying to drive. And you don't have to worry about it overheating. In terms of the AiM Solo, you simply turn it on and it is ready to go.

I've used trackmaster and torque for years. I recently bought a Quartz GPS 10hz receiver and compared it directly to a Solo AIM while also running a transponder. I'm buying a Solo after testing it. The track I tested the Solo at was about 1:03 lap times. Trackmaster even with a Quartz was off by 2/10ths. The Solo is much easier to use, automatically shuts down and doesn't crash randomly or get phone calls. I honestly wasn't sold until I got home and looked at my data with the software. Amazing.
Torque and Trackmaster are great but when you really want to analyze data Solo is the ticket.

Smartphone apps aren't going to compare to a dedicated data acquisition system, but they're great at being inexpensive and convenient. Put in the effort to find a good spot for the GPS signal, and it's an easy way to do lap timing, some standard OBD datalogging (if you get one of the add-ons for that), basic analysis, and make neat videos with data overlays.
