Default LS6 issues

As far as engine type issues, what are the major things that need to be done to help one live during hard racing? Aftermarket oil pump? I know a good radiator and oil cooler are at the top of the list but I have read some where that people have had oiling issues or something to that extent. What other short comings should I look for. Thanks.

Not so much from what I've read on the LS6s, it's the LS2 (early), LS3, and LS7 that like to explode. Keep the LS6 cool and don't open it up and you should be fine. Also with stock pump be sure to overfill 1 quart as well.

LS6 are almost bullet proof.

a few things:

larger radiator
Oil cooler
Accu-sump
Clutch drain

Key here is the larger oil cooler. The cooler the oil the less you need to worry about the water.
The biggest oil cooler you can fit and you won't need to worry about the radiator.
Just remove the AC and clean the radiator so you have good flow to and through the radiator.

Make sure to remove the stock fan shroud and put a good Spal fan in it's place. I have the big radiator, Setrab 25 row oil cooler and all that stuff. Was still running 230's coolant and 270-280 oil temps. I removed the shroud and replaced with spal fan and ran COTA a week and half ago and my coolant temps were around 210 and oil around 240.

It was really cool two weeks ago when you ran COTA, do you really think that is valid proof removing the shroud works? If it works at COTA in July then it's golden!

Shroud and fans only help when car is going slow. Otherwise, they might restrict air flow.

It was 75 and humid as hell on Saturday and my temps were still what I posted. I've found that 75 or 100 and my peak temps are close to the same regardless with the shrouded setup. Now with the shroud removed, we'll see if peaks change with ambient temperature. Will it move some, yeah, probably.

Plus, it's well accepted ambient temps do little for cooling, it's the sustained RPMs that generate the heat and how well you are setup to dissipate that heat from the system is what counts.

My point is don't go to all the trouble and expense of getting a nice big radiator with all the extra cooling capacity and then choke it off with the stock shroud.

N.B. I went back and looked at my data and there was a 10 degree difference in cooling temps from Saturday afternoon (hottest time on track, 75) and Sunday morning (coolest time on track low 40s). So ambients accounted for some cooling effect.

There were/are some problems with valve springs breaking and there were some problems with rocker arms bearings as I remember.
