Date code is the last four digits of the DOT number if there is one. The first two digits are the week (01-52) and the last two digits are the year.
Tires are too old for HPDE when they are too slick, or have cords showing.

For HPDE I'd take 'em down to nothing, no use in wasting rubber on learning how to drive as long as they're not dangerously slick. If they're cracked and dryrotted, they're trash already.

(On my Subaru) I ran a set of Toyo RA1's for 4 seasons at the track. Sure they get older/harder every year but they still had a ton of grip till the very end and were 100x better than my street set of RE01R's which are an excellent street tire.
Look for signs of cracking that would indicate the tire is damaged and would not be safe for track use.
