Default Carbotech XP-16, anybody tried this pad?

I have been burning through the XP-12 front pads in one weekend, so I gave the XP-20 at try. They lasted longer (one weekend at VIR and one weekend at CMP) but ate up my rotors pretty good. Has anyone tried the XP-16? If you tried the 16, did you stay with the XP-10 on the rear or go with the XP-12s? Any feedback is appreciated. Dan

I like the XP-16's on the front of my C6 Z51. Rotor wear isn't too bad. W/o brake bias controls, I feel like the XP-10's are still the right choice for the rears.
It could be worth talking to the guys at Carbotech. On their recommendation, I picked up a different compound for my Viper and the rotors lasted a whole season. Can't remember the pad #.

I have a C6Z with stoptech 60s on the front and ran the 16s front and back all last year. I got about 1 hour 30min of braking out of them by track mate data running Hoosiers. I liked them.

Carbotech™ XP16™

Carbotech™ XP16™ is a step up from the highly successful XP12™ compound. With an aggressive initial bite, torque and fade resistance, and higher than our XP12™ compound. XP16™ has a temperature range of 250°F to 2000°F+ (121°C to 1093°C+). Carbotech™ XP16™ has outstanding release and modulation that has made all other Carbotech™ compounds so successful. The XP16™ is the most rotor aggressive compound from Carbotech™, but compared to its competition the XP16™ is still very rotor friendly. Carbotech™ XP16™ is NOT recommended for use as a daily driven street pad due to possible elevated levels of dust and noise.

I run Toyo R888s for HPDE and Hoosier R6s for Time Trials. Would the XP-16 be more agressive on the rotor than the XP-20s?

Xp16 will not last as long, it was designed as a sprint pad for short races. As far as wear I would say not as harsh on rotors. What rotors were you using? Do you have any pics of the old rotor?

I don't have pics and took rotors to metal recycling center where they pay cash for my used rotors. The rotor was grooved out pretty good as compared to the XP-12 which is a smooter wear. I use the Autozone made in China rotors which don't last long. I'm changing to DBA this spring.

Adam, several of us are sometimes seeing rotor grooving. By sometime, I mean very infrequently. Odd, but it just shows up now and then. For example, I put on a set of xp12's (pre bed) on a new set of rings at Nationals and groved the rings.

I run Xp12/Xp8 in a 4000 lb Camaro with C5 front brakes, cooling ducts and 385 rwhp.

I get at least 2 full weekends out of a set of fronts. I brake early and way too long, I am trying to break this habit as I earn trust in the brakes.

You sure your rears are working?

BTW I am on NT-05's, 275/40/17's

It's all temp related and normal. Unpredictable really, but if you are attending tracks that are more brake intensive than others, you would be more likely to see it at those tracks. Other variables can be involved, calipers, brake fluid, etc.....but the overall temp of the pads and rotors is most responsible for it.

How so? When you exceed the temp ratings of a pad they will melt themselves onto the rotor surface causing vibration or pulsating of the brakes.

I think its more of a rotor composition issue.

The pads he is using are temp rated to 1900 deg F. At that 1400 deg F, the rotors start to get cherry red, and begin to soften, the XP12 compound does not. So, the rotor starts to groove and wear at a faster rate, due to it's temp. He would have to have the pads and the rotors above 1900 Deg F to begin leaving pad deposits on the rotors. In this case, that did not happen, at least by the description given. If he were to go over 1900 deg F, pad deposits and vibration would indeed occur.

We see rotor grooving with XP12, XP16, XP20 and XP22 where we do not with the XP10 and the lower rated compounds because of the temp ratings of each of the compounds. It is just the way it works, everything has a temp limit and at certain temps the performance characteristics begin to change with everything in the braking system.

Adam I have talked to you on the phone.

You recommended the XP16 for my car on the front, would the XP16 with the XP8 on the rear be a decent combo?

99 Z28, C5 front brakes, stock rear brakes, 385 rwhp, 3900 ish lbs on Nitto NT05 tires.

I like the XP12/XP8 combo but as I explore deeper braking I am overheating them and getting some vibration at the end of the sessions.

I think you would be better suited on XP20 & XP10 combo.
