AIM Solo Lap Timer.. Looking for Feedback and anything similar
I'm seriously looking at getting the AIM Solo. I've downloaded the software to test out and all the reviews are pretty good on it.
Is there anything else out there that is similar in terms of functions and quality for around the same price before I make the final decision?

I think the Solo is in a league of it's own in that price range. You basically get a lightweight data system for the cost of a laptimer. The predictive timing ("+/- best") feature is awesome and can be a useful training tool. If you have a newer car you should talk to an AIM dealer and see if you can use the Solo DL to collect even more detailed info from your cars computer.

Just picked up a Solo DL my self last week. Have not had a chance to use it yet but based on the reviews etc. it looks great. Also as and fyi AIM is coming our with a new SmartyCAM HD shortly. Not sure if their cams will work with the standard Solo but I know that with the DL it automatically overlays data on the video. So no need to try and manually sync things up etc!

I use the AIM solo purely for the in-car predictive lap timing functionality. I love it. So easy to use. Has all the tracks in it and selects them automatically.

Been using the AIM Solo for about 8 track days and love it's simplicity; I just turn it on and use it as a lap timer. Best part is when I download the data after a track day the analysis software is awesome. I can look at speeds and G forces on every turn for every lap and look for opportunities to go faster. Most important, it helps me understand why the slow laps were slow and the faster laps quicker. This is great for an engineering geek like myself......lots of data!

AIM Solo is great. The DL is what you want if you have an '06+ car since it can pull a lot of extra data off the CAN bus... the real answer, though, is that you need to go mess with all the analysis software. You need to be able to use that well for any given data system to be useful to you. Unless you just want a fancy lap timer...

Here's a quick start guide I wrote for using the AiM Solo and Race Studio 2. Let me know if you have any questions!

A buddy was using the Aim Solo DL at a recent track day. We downloaded his data into another guys computer who had the higher end Aim software for his race car. Anyway, this other guy was shocked by how much info was on the DL. My buddy had plugged into the OBD2 port and told the unit what kind of car he had ('11 Z06 Z07).
Long story short, it showed throttle position %, air temps, engine temps, coolant temps, and a ton of other data. This other racer guy was surprised with how good the sampling rate was, nearly realtime.
Add all the above data to the predictive lap time and other goodies, and I'm seriously considering picking one up too.

I have a C5Z and from my understanding the Solo DL is unable to collect certain channels of data from the C5 model years, can someone clarify which channels the system is unable to record?

If there is enough interest, I can probably talk to AiM and see if it's possible to develop a protocol for the C5.

The AiM Solo is great, the DL would be even better if it worked with my C5. As it is I am really happy with my Solo but I would sell it and purchase the DL in a heartbeat if a protocol was developed for it to get at least the main inputs from an OBDII connection.
I would be interested in steering position, throttle %, brake pressure, oil pressure, and temps Anything more is a bonus.
