Default My cheap, fast, and fairly accurate data setup

The first video below is actually shot with my iphone and I can upload it to youtube from the track! This requires no PC and the whole process can be managed from your iphone and the editing is done on youtube. If I had a better phone mount and an iPhone 4s the quality would be better but it still is lacking a bit for me as it can't look at the data over multiple laps. It will soon though so it will probably be the easiest way to get the data I want by next year with an iphone 5 doing the video recording.

The other videos are taken on a gopro HD Hero and would look much much better if I stopped being cheap and bought a GoPro Hero 2! I take that video and import it into Dashware. Dashware is very difficult to use until you figure it out. I am only now starting to really get it. The documentation is diabolical and the support has been lackluster at best. There is another program called Trackvision which apparently is better but it costs 3x what Dashware costs and so it went with Dashware.

All of the data you see in my video is captured by my iphone using Harry's laptimer. Here is a video (you need to skip in because the data starts when I cross start finish) that shows what it will look like with Throttle and RPM data:

I didn't add the map or g forces to this one but I could have. Just forgot:

More data displayed here:

In order to do this you need the following.

Harry's Laptimer for the iPhone (if you don't use an iPhone an iPod touch or iPad can be substituted) - http://www.gps-laptimer.de
Emprum UltiMate GPS - http://amzn.com/B005I0JYUY
Satechi CR-3600 Universal Car Holder & Mount for iPhone4S, 4, 3GS, 3G - http://amzn.com/B002K9IPOC
Kiwi PLX OBDII WiFi - http://amzn.com/B002ICSOTC
If you don't plan to record using the iPhone you can buy a GoPro HD Hero II Motorsport edition and Dashware

Two things:

I bought the mount before video was available through the app so I would check Harry's site here (http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Compatibility.html) for better alternatives if you plan to do video that way but the mount I bought seems to be ok.

There is a new option for OBDII data, the GoPoint BT1 (and GL1) which works over Bluetooth which is supposedly better. It doesn't work with Harry's laptimer yet but will soon so it might be worth holding out for.

Let me know if this helps or if you have any questions.

I have a very similar set-up, but not using iPhone. I do use Trackmaster on Android ($5.99) to capture data. For more accuracy, I have lately switched from phones internal 1 Hz GPS to an external (Bluetooth) 10 Hz GPS (~$80; Qstar), which makes everything look more smooth. I also use Dashware to put it on, and agree that the Dashware UI could be made much more intuitive I use Go Pro for video.

In short:
Minimal --> Trackmaster software to collect data and optinally capture video, too. $5.99
Better --> Use external Bluetooth GPS device. ~$80 + $5.99 = ~$86
Best --> Use GoPro to capture video. +$250 = $336.

It's still pretty cheap considering the professional alternatives.

I'm also using Trackmaster + GoPro but I use Racerender2 to combine the video and data. I used the free version for this video and it wasn't too hard to figure out how to set up the gauges and align the data to the video.

I got the GoPoint BT in anticipation of it being incorporated into Harry's Lap Timer. It is kind of cool what the free GoPoint app tracks. It also works for multiple vehicles. Just waiting for Harry to update so I can log some engine data info while at the track. May try the Dash Commander.

I use a Panasonic point and shoot camera with HD video capability (could use any other type of camera), along with the AiM Solo for data, and put it together using Dashware, which I found not too hard to use after a little experimentation. Only problem I have right now is vibration.

Here's the result:

I'll try using the GoPro Hero 2 next but I'm not sure where to mount it. I have another GoPro Wide (non-HD) which I could also mount simultaneously to embed video of the pedal work.

What iPhone was used for those videos? I have a 3GS at the moment (too lazy and cheap to upgrade), and just bought an Emprum Ultimate to try out. The 3GS on its own was entirely insufficient for track use with Harry's Laptimer.

Hey guys - new harrys laptimer user here.....

First time at the track with it I couldn't get more than 1 lap to record - seemed like the iphone was timing out - I did set the phone to never lock....

Any ideas what I'm doin wrong?

Thanks...

I have to say, that is pretty damn good for going direct to iPhone! I just bought the PLX kiwi2 and can't wait to set it up!

I have a goPro as well but it seems like synching the video to the data streams post run might be tricky...anyone have any tips on that?

I haven't seem that happen but I did have another crash that happened randomly and I ended up contacting Harry and he was able to rebuild my database so it worked.

I use dashware and I have a few methods. If I can see the phone screen in the video it is easy to see it start counting. If not, I typically look for the first shift and synch it based on the data. I keep meaning to simply make a motion with my hand when the timer starts the first time but I never have. If it was mounted outside I was thinking about honking once.

anyone know if trackmaster is going to incorporate OBDII data? I just tried it this week ...

http://youtu.be/qoxrfQVS-7k

pretty cool and easy to use but I'd like car data as well without having to use a second app and merge a second file etc.

The programmer mentioned it about a year ago on his forum.

I tested Harry's Laptimer with an Emprum Ultimate on my 3GS last week at Thunderhill. Below are the times it recorded for a couple sessions, as well as the times obtained using an AMB transponder. I was very impressed.

Harry's Laptimer / AMB Transponder
2:15.23 2:15.227
2:14.73 2:14.787
2:16.35 2:16.331
2:14.18 2:14.235
2:16.26 2:16.256
2:13.77 2:13.825
2:14.99 2:14.941
2:11.64 2:11.653
2:12.53 2:12.498

Yes I had the Emprum attached. Otherwise, the data was total garbage, which happened during one session when it had detached.

Wow! For the money I'm impressed with data overlap with an Iphone. Pretty neat.

If you're running stock gearing the mph indicator definitely seems a little off to me. I think I'm shifting to 4th in my Z at around 100-101mph.

I tried the Satechi Mounted and I did not like it. It is a great general purpose mount, but for camera work or more importantly accelerometer and GPS work I thought it was very poor choice. Reason is the "geared" pivots. Each pivots has a tiny bit of slop. Over 3 pivots this translates to a significant amount of slop with you device.

I switched to the RAM Mount. Fantastic mount. It uses two rubber coated ball pivots. Once you have your position set, you tighten down the clamps and there is no play or slop. The RAM Mount comes in both aluminum and a plastic. Do NOT buy the plastic, get the aluminum version for long term durability. The RAM Mount is also universal in that you buy the mount then you buy the phone/device carrier which screws to the Mount.

Oh and for iPhone users, you will have to take your phone out of the case, but the phone snaps into it carrier securely without slop or play. For iPhone 5 users, RAM will not have a carier available for a few more weeks.
