Default What are you using for tensioners?

One of mine is finally getting loud enough that I have to replace it.

Don't need a (insert speed shop logo) on it, just something maybe a little better than the stock c5z ones. Maybe a better lip to keep the belt on (not that I have an issue).

Maybe even one with a real (manual) adjuster??

Thanks.

For the main serp belt (all I have left) I use a Katech manual tensioner. I recently acquired another on for the motor going in my father's Panoz.

When I was supercharged, everyone switched from the LS1/6 ones to the newer LS2 ones as it had a taller lip. For some reason, it would not align correctly on mine so I stayed with original. I may still have the one I bought 4 years ago. If you want it, and I can find it, I will make you a real good deal. Let me know.

166,000+ miles and still doing the job, with a 7050rpm redline where it has been spending a bit of time lately.

No, they are different. You can probably just try replacing the bearing in the tensioner pulley and see if that cures it. It should be like $5.

It's weird how one goes 50k and another 166k, luck of the draw.

Where do I get those bearings? I'm not afraid to try pressin one in.

You would need to take a look at the bearing and then do a google search for a supplier. You can get a whole new tensioner for $42 @ Rock Auto.

Katech is good but doesn't it use the oem pulley and bearing. It just makes it non self adjusting

The early ones had you swap the OEM pulley. The later ones have a high lip pulley on them.

All of our more serious racers use our HD tensioner that we came up with for roots style blowers. (it replaces the stock tensioner and does not need to be used with a supercharger) It will not allow the belts to be thrown from heavy heel toe shifting etc like the stock one will, yet it is still spring loaded so you are not over stressing your accessories.

Nice piece. The fixed tensioners don't overstress the accessories though. You set the tesnion to 25 ft/lbs and then lock the set nut to 40. Yes, over tightening could cause issues, but if you follow the provided instructions there won't be any. I had a manual tensioner on my old Z06 for a few years and my current one for 2. Never had a single pulley issue.

Default Diagnose squeal under hood - how to?

Check this,

Am I correct that it's a worn belt or not? This a good way to check?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGJ_upGrQBo

or

could it be not ENOUGH tension?

50k miles on stock tensioner.

Thanks!

That can be caused by a few things:

1. Old belt
2. Bad tensioner pulley
3. Bad idler pulley

Grab a can of WD-40 with the straw nozzle attached and shoot a small bit at each pulley/idler one at a time. Try not to get it on the belt as that will make any belt squeal go away. If you lube one idler and it gets quiet you've found your problem.

On my old Z06 it got squeeky and I tried everything. Even new idlers etc. I ended up replacing the belt with a new Gatorback one and it was quiet ever since.
