I have the Longacre Digital Camber/Castor gauge and like it a lot, it's really easy to use for getting the measurements and making adjustments.
Also have an Allstar toe gauge, this one I really don't care for.... it has too much play in it to get accurate measurements. When I have time I'm going to use the string method for checking toe and thrust angle.
I do repair work as a secondary business so it made better sense to get the tools to cover a wide range of cars. I would honestly try Mr. Farmer's method first to get the car set how you want, if you're planning on making adjustments down the road multiple times then it may make sense to consider buying the tools just to make the process a little quicker.
You can find a multitude of web pages showing how to make turn-plates to save you some money.

This toe in gauge is good for the price.
However, if you do not have much fender clearance, you will need another set of pointers that are straight, or only bent slightly closer to the tip...
