Default Coolest Jobs in Tech: How Data Engineers Help the Corvette C6.Rs Win Races

Computer geeks are helping the No. 4 Corvette C6.R team win races.

In a world where a fraction of a second sometimes determines the outcome, it only makes sense that usually it's the little things that can make the difference.

That’s where people like Chuck Houghton, race engineer for the Corvette Racing team in the American Le Mans Series GT class, can have a big influence on what happens on the track, even though they’re not behind the wheel of the car or even on the pit crew.

I've seen openings for those types of positions on the Pratt & Miller web site:

There are lots of pros and cons to these types of jobs, beyond the hours and travel. One of my buds was an engineer on the Ford F1 engine program in the early '90s. Two years going to every F1 race and he never saw a single minute of live action; he was glued to the telemetry in a support trailer.

Pratt & Miller has been doing a lot of stuff now outside of racing, so some of these jobs are for defense and non-motorsports. I've always liked their line at the end of the motorsports related jobs about "significant stress" and "extensive travel".

And GM shuts down the Corvette program, brings it in house (like Katech) or give it to another company. I would never work somewhere where the eggs fall to much in one basket.

That's why P&M started software development and defense, to diversify.

They also seem to have a significant auto restoration business and do rapid prototyping. The people that I have talked to that work there say it is a great place to work.
