Need a plan C for this weekend - anyone use a rental car for and HPDE
Pros?
Cons?
Experience?
I need a car for the weekend - wife put the kibash on using the Camaro and I'm not finishing the engine for the 92 this week
I think there is a neighborhood Hertz and Enterprise near me.
Don't want to drive to the airport

I haven't but I ran with a guy who's Porsche wasn't working so he rented a Dodge Charger. It was an automatic, with an open diff and he couldn't completely turn off the computer but he still had fun.
Probably cheaper to do this for an HPDE than your own car. I'm not sure what the obligations would be if there was a problem that involved body damage...

They usually ask where your going with the car. I would love to see the response when you tell them.
A friend of mine took advantage of Hertz one time. Hertz had a special to rent Lincoln town cars for a week with no mileage limitation. He and two buddies into white water rafting left Minneapolis and went out west for a weeks vacation rafting. Hertz was PO'd when they turned the car back in with 3,000 miles and dirty. Only cost them like 300 bucks for the car plus gas.

Watch for the cars with GPS installed on them. They will send a roll back to the track you are at and haul the car away and you pay the tow. My buddy races cars and while at HPDE's he has seen that happen twice. If they see their car it what they consider a racing situation..... you will have a lot of explaining to do.

Why not rent a race car? I'm sure someone in your track area does it. Check out the NASA forums or contact the event organizer.
Safer, and they maintain the car for you.

I know at the nurburgring there are reps from the rental companies like enterprise that will look for their cars and of course there is the gps. Im not sure how bad it is on this side of the water though...
An autox would be safe since its not on a permanent course and the speeds are pretty low so any potential data logging wouldn't show 100 something mph- not sure about going to a full track.
Look at it this way though - a person could be at a racetrack in a rental car because they needed transportation to the event and not necessarily because they were participating in the event...

Me and a friend rented chevy aveos when his vette broke down. One of the best times I have had at a track. Twenty bucks and just had to rotate the tires halfway through.

Several years ago I saw Hertz Vettes at a couple of Daytona HPDE's.
I think there are 2 of them in the pic below - I think the yellow Vette way back in the far corner is a Rent-a-Vette as well as the one in the front of the picture.
That's the Hertz ZHZ Vette - you can see their badging on the fender, their special striping, and the special wheels on a ZHZ car. To my knowledge, they all have automatic transmissions.
I haven't seen them at the track in the last couple years.

Did they give you any grief when you returned them with bald tires?
If I was instructing at a track I had time on this wouldn't even be a discussion. Since its a new track I'd like to drive it some to be aware of things to make my time with students safer.

Since I rotated the tires the wear was pretty even. The tread wear rating on those things was probably 1000 and you can't carry much speed in that car. Plus who in their right mind would ask if I took an aveo to the track. Rent something cheap and run in intermediate instead of advanced. Better than being on the sideline.

There was someone at VIR last weekend in the Shelby GT-H, which is their Hertz rental model. Not sure if he was renting or had bought it. Seems like if he had bought it, he would have removed the -H decal.

Looks like an Aveo or similar is around $100 and a Sentra or similar is around $120 for the weekend.
Plus their insurance - just in case. This should work.
