Default What transmission/diff combination do you run?

I'm often asked by customers what is the BEST set up for HPDE is. While I do understand there are variables (power level/chassis set up/different course layout) but the specific set up I'm looking for is: M12 (or MZ6) with 3.42's or MM6 with 3.42's. I have had every combination under the sun for my personal C5 and I finally settled on M12/3.42's. If there are others running different combinations, please do post and let me know pros/cons about your set up. Thanks in advance!

As you know the C5 has the MM6 while the C5 Z06 has the M12.

I have the MM6 with 3.42 (C5 Coupe). I tried 3.73 and 4.10... went back to 3.42.

Based on my research/recommendations from others, the gearing in the MM6 is preferred to the M12 close ratio gearing for the road courses.

Ratios:MM6....................M12
1st:....2.66....................2.97
2nd:...1.78..................2.07
3rd:....1.30..................1.43
4th:....1.00..................1.00
5th:....0.74..................0.84

6th:....0.50...................0.57
Rev:....2.9....................2.9

What were your thoughts and reasoning behind sticking with the M12 gearing?

I enjoy learning more about gearing and the pluses and minuses associated with a variety of options.

Thanks, Mike

Although I do run some HPDE events from time to time, my ride is mostly a street car. That being said, I personally like this set up for all around drivability/performance.

I set-up 3 cars and they all have a different combination
M12 - 3.42
MN6 - 3.42
GM racing box (ZR1 ratios) - 3.90

I think if it's between the M12 and MN6 the MN6 has better ratios for HPDE's the only drawback to the MN6 is that 5th gear is pretty much useless so if you go to tracks with long straits you don't really have 5th as an option. But for the most part the MN6 is a better box for track use.

I don't want to hijack, but.....What would be considered a long track vs. a short track?? I've been to three different courses and have used 5th at all of them. (NJMP, lightning and thunder bolt, and Calabogie MSP in Canada).

Road Atlanta, Road America and Pocono are examples of tracks with "long" straights.

I would consider Sebring a long course. The back straight just eats horsepower. Roebling Road is a good example of short. I would also consider PBIR and the Homestead road course short.

I think the only "long" course in the NE would be Pocono-IMSA. Which is terribly long. I don't get out of 4th anywhere else, but I have been driving a slow car w/a 7k redline.

What kind of times are you running at NJMP..
Thunderbolt
Lightning

How much RWHP do you have?

I never see or need 5th unless I short shift for some reason.

with a 25.5" tire 1:1 4th will put you @ 155 mph with a 7000 rpm redline and 3.42. Pretty much below 400 RWHP, that's gonna be about as fast as you go at the "fast" tracks.

Thanks for the replies. Keep them coming. I think the consenses are that you want to be in couple of gears and not shift much on HPDE events?

There is an option of changing to TR6060 internals with these gears:

2.66
1.78
1.30
1.00
0.80
0.63

Shifting doesnt matter, as long as you do it quickly. You want to stay in the area with the best average torque, and using 4 gears to split up the 60-160 spread is better than doing it with 3 or even 2 gears.

154 is what I got on VIR and Road Atlanta with GY G19s 18x11.5x25.5" and 6850 rpm Red line

The GM Motorsports box fits this.

That looks like an excellent option for track days while still having a streetable (for gas mileage) 6th gear.

I'm in the process of ordering it through Rick right now.
