AMLS to VIR?
This would be great!
ALMS: WEC date clash with Petit Le Mans avoided, series likely to add VIR to schedule
By: Gary Watkins on 12/08/2011
The original WEC schedule published last month listed the race at the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain on the same mid-October weekend as Petit, the ALMS season finale. The Middle Eastern event and the Japanese round at Fuji have now swapped places on the calendar, while Bahrain has a new date one week ahead of Petit.
“We switched the dates between Bahrain and Japan due to a major logistical problem for freight and staff just after Brazil,” said WEC general manager Gerard Neveu. “It was a request from most of the teams and it makes good sense for our WEC calendar.”
He described the avoidance of a clash with Petit Le Mans on Oct. 20, which was a by-product of the change, as a “good fact.”
The original schedule had been criticized by ALMS boss Scott Atherton. He had been working with the series promoter, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest at Le Mans, to make Petit a WEC round and stated on the announcement of the first calendar that it was a “disappointment to suddenly learn that the ACO has decided to schedule an event in conflict with Petit Le Mans.”
Petit has been a round of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup--which has morphed into the WEC for next season after a tie-up between the ACO and the FIA--for the past two seasons. Next year, the 12 Hours of Sebring will be the only WEC event in the United States after the ACO opted to take the other event scheduled for the American continents to Brazil.
The 2012 WEC calendar was confirmed at this week's meeting of the FIA World Motor Sport Council. The Chinese round, which is likely to take place on Nov. 11 or 18, will be held at either Zhuhai or Shanghai.
Meanwhile, sources indicate that an ALMS race at Virginia International Raceway appears set to take place on Sept. 15-16. The series earlier said that it planned to add a spring and fall race to its 2012 schedule. There is no word as of yet regarding when the ALMS will confirm the VIR event, or what venue might host the new spring race.

I always liked GA over AMLS because of the huge fields and competitive racing, but a race is a race. I go to the AMLS race at Mid-Ohio every year and they've put on a decent show, but there are far too few prototype cars. Hopefully that will improve.

Tickets are on sale for the VIR AMLS event. They're a bit pricey at $70, but I'll still be going. My brother is a huge AMLS fan and he's coming down from Ohio for this.
Anyone from CFA&R planning on going?
