Default Recession Aero

Finished stage one of my 3 part Aero upgrade for TT. I bought a C6 hood on Craigslist for under $200, and this is the result. Above 30mph, it draws lots of hot air out (according to the yarn/tuft test). I basically made it as large as possible using the space between the radiator and engine. I may trim it down a bit, but it's easier to trim down than to start over and make it taller.

Next step is a COT wing (again got it at a bargain). I also got a ZR1 splitter free, but I have to wrangle the funds to buy or build the necessary fascia insert.

It's not pretty, but I may eventually get it all painted to match. Photos aren't great either, but I wanted to share.

Looks awesome. Let us know how it performs on the track. Now I know why you didn't have time to work on my Z06!

I'll try and post some video of the tufts in action. Just some ghetto wind tunnel work with my leaf blower, but the venturi effect of the air across the top is impressive, even without pressurized air from the engine bay.

I'd never do this to a good original hood, but I got a smokin' deal on it!

COTM wing is very attractive from a price point, but isn't it really narrow?

We used the HOWE Camaro hood, and cut it down to fit the Vette. Coupled with the louvers supplied from Tommy Riggins, lowered underhead temp and oil temp. I think the hood was less than 300 bucks. Very light as well.

once you get the idea of what shape you want, would it be possible to make some cuts in that section (on another hood of course) and then use a heat gun to bend the flaps in/out as necessary that way its all a seamless 1 piece design? or is the smc/fiberglass too thick to do this with?

the SMC is very thin but rigid. I had thought about doing it that way, but the aluminum wasn't a problem for me. I'm not sure if SMC will soften with heat or not.

Nice job, David!

I love the thread title!!!

I bet the thing acts just like a chimney for evacuating the heat.

Can't wait to see the wing mounted.

BTW, I have some of the NASCAR splitters if anyone needs one. They're tougher than about anything I've seen.

David,

This will demonstrate my gross ignorance of the under-engine treatment of the C6, but bear with me here --

Is it your thought that this front chimney will also relieve lift from air entering under the front of the car? Or is it almost exclusively for cooling purposes?

Do you have another strategy for scavenging air compressing under the front?

Thanks,
Ed

[By the way, even when the economy is very good, we employ recession-style development!]

reducing air stacking and spilling under the car is MORE important to me than cooling. I've removed the airdams and reconfigured the brake ducts to be front intake only, so the bottom is clean. Ultimately it will have a real splitter/undertray, but for now, I want every CFM possible to go in or over, and to come out the top. You can't completely seal off the underside and sides of the engine bay, but the goal is to get as much our out of the top as possible.

here is a link to my video test, up to around 80mph. Sorry about almost hitting the dogs and schoolbus, just one of those days!

VIDEO PROCESSING, will correct soon!

Looks good David!! I just put an L88 scoop on my C4 and I am going to cut the front part open like this hoping to get the same effect. I was worried the opening was too small but its about the size of yours, maybe a little wider, and yours seems to flow very well.

This is my scoop(so far):

David,

Just as our old "rule of thumb" would indicate, one can see that venturi effect really take hold around 60 MPH, with those yarn threads become very excited.

I am wondering if your next challenge will be tending to that extra volume of air so that it does not "bunch up" in front of the windshield. Or maybe the angle of exit is already steep enough that it will evacuate over the roof? (More yarn, please!)

This is great stuff, Dave.

the opening is actually pretty large, larger than the total open area of most louvered hoods. I need to buy a little flow meter and try and get some actual numbers. That, or try and get some free time at the Windshear Wind Tunnel down the street (not likely).

At this point, I'm not concerned about air stacking up at the cowl, as long as it isn't reversing all the way back down to the opening. Pressure stacked on top of the car might add some drag, but it's also adding downforce.

Very nice, David. You are going to have to work to get the car balanced. With no rear wing you are going to get a lot of overstear because the front is going to have a lot more down force. You should have a lof of fun playing with it.

It took us many hours at the Mooresville wind tunnel to get the Katech parts balanced. It is a long way from just plug and play unless you buy a complete system like Katech's.

Please keep us posted.

Good luck!

Jim

You missed the opening post, I have a ZR1 splitter and a COT Wing. COT wing is only 5', but it's much more efficient than a spoiler.

No offense to Katech, but they aren't the only show in town. Trans Am in the good ole' days, World Challenge etc all started with a la carte packages before single-source suppliers came along.

There are also some things in the works that I can't discuss yet, but I assure you the end goal is very attainable.
