Default Building the Perfect LS1 Roadrace motor...Help From the experts please!

Guys, I've got an LS1 motor with a heads/cam swap. Got it in trade/cash for helping a buddy swap it out due to stripped head bolts/head gasket leaking. So the motor needs to be gone thru and the block will need to be repaired for the threads on the head bolts (1 or 2 bolts)

Here's the thing... I want to do a dry sump, and I'd like to address any other known issues while we're building the motor... I've been out of the Vette Scene since 2006, so I'm playing catchup here...

Here's what it's going into:

Currently there is a TKO 600 trans I plan to keep in it, along with the driveline. The 383 stroker that's currently in it will be sold off this winter while I build the LS1.

Soon there is going to be an in depth LS roadrace engine build article in Chevy High Performance covering my new bullet.....lots to do to make these things survive for 40 minutes or longer at engine speeds over 7k..

It will be nice to see some usefull info in CHP. They have been doing their best to ruin the C5Z05 they have been building. Has anyone else seen that was they add mods, they are going slower and placing lower in all the autox's that they attend

Guys thanks for the responses... I'll be a few days responding. My dad passed away a couple days ago and we're dealing with that right now...I'll get back to this build/thread in a few days/weeks...

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your loss, Mike. I lost my mom two weeks ago, still dealing with it...

Have a good one (or the best you can), we'll be here when you get your head back above water,

So I'm reviving this thread since we just hosed the main bearings in the 383 stroker that was in the mighty Datsun Zcar. Totally my fault. We crossed the oil feed lines from the remote filter/cooler. What's done is done, but now I'm moving onto the LS1.

Here is what I currently have planned for the car, which has changed a bit since the thread was started last year...

This is what we have so far:

Patriot 5.3L heads with Patriot Double springs
Yello Terra 1.8 roller rockers
Comp Cams 216/220 114LSA with a 525/532-ish lift (still trying to get that info nailed down)
LS6 intake
ARE Drysump oil pan (should be here next week from a buddy)

I'm planning to go drysump with this setup, but what should I plan to do with the bottom end of the motor? Anything special with rod-bolts? Forged rotating assembly and scrap the stock setup? I'm all ears...

I will transfer my FAST XFi EFI and FAST DASH setup, and plan to still use the TKO600 Tremec trans.

Here is what the car looks like today:

Over the summer we cleaned up the interior, ditched the Painless wiring junk and went circuit by circuit and rewired the whole car, installing the fast dash along with it. I built the dashboard out of kydex. The stuff is magic to work with.

With the LS1 in there we should have the car down below 2500 pounds. I had a few good outings this year debugging but never could get the car to run to its potential. Suspension and brakes are close to dialed in, but a fuel deliver issue at NCCAR hampered us and then wiring gremlins at Summit Point, both of which have been resolved.

We've addressed those issues and now I just need a reliable mill under the hood.

IMHO if you are going to tear it all apart and rebuild for track longevity, here is what I would do. New forged 383 stroker rotating assembly, all ARP fasteners everywhere, Kateck timing chain and dampener, dry sump system, Comp cams "Torque cam", possibly a FAST intake, port match intake and heads. I would want a "torque monster" motor with max torque from 3500-6500 rpm rather than screaming high 7000 + rpm horsepower. Pulling around 2500 lbs that engine would be a killer combination !

Forgot to mention, I plan to use the Tilton 5.5inch triple disc setup with the bellhousing if I can get Tilton to confirm the TKO600 will work with that bolt pattern. The budget for the Drysump and the Tilton hardware is set to $6,000.00.

383 stroke the LS1... interesting. Was over on Texas Speed's website reading up... That's certainly an option. The old school 383 stroker was making 450BHP and about 490 # ft. of torque. My goal isn't to increase HP much, but to get the benefit of the 100 pounds less weight with the LSx platform. My #1 goal is to have the LS1 survive multiple track seasons. More power at this point isn't going to make me faster at this point. More seat time will.

Mike what class are you going to run in? What does the z weight in at?
last winter the shop that installed my freshly built by Eric Konig 434ci ls2 crossed the remote filter and it spun two crank bearings 20 miles from the shop just trying to get it home. With the new build went mild enough to run pump 91 and used stock ls7 heads still made 510 rwhp, should be good for NASA ST1 running slicks, Love that Z car seal grey?

Z06801, The car currently weighs about 2585 pounds. We're expecting the 102 pound reduction going to the LS1 will make a huge difference and get me to Sub-2500. I'd like to eventually move it into ST1, but this coming year I'll shoot for Time Trials first.

It's a Viper color code, but the painter played around with the mix. I have a 2004 Porsche GT3 that is Seal Grey and close in color to the Zcar. Love them both!
