changed the tensioner,the idler pullery,the belt,,still squalling like a little girl...how to tell if it's the water pump....'98 C-5 six speed....

One simple thing you can do while eliminating sources is to remove the oil fill cap while the squeek is happening. If the squeeking stops it is vacuum related and air is getting past your seals.

Is the balancer coming off.
check to see if it is wobbling and out of line.

Does the car have a/c? If so take the main belt off. If the noise does not go away it could be your a/c. Its on a separate belt.

Isolate by removing one belt at a time as mentioned.....a/c tensioners like to get "out of plane" and make noise....as well as its idler...

I had an chirp I chased to no avail on my old Z06. I replaced the tensioner and both idlers. A buddy told me to try a Gatorback belt and as a last ditch effort I did.... and the car shut up. Dunno why in this particular case that worked, but I was going nuts with a fancy (at the time) car that chirped like a bird.

changed waterpump today,tear into a/c stuff tomorrow...just for grins the noise is now intermitant...gggrrrrr
