C4 manual steering ????
Did I read somewhere that a C4 can become manual steering with very little work?? Without changing out the rack. I've done that but never again. I was in a race on Sat and after about 10 laps the hose or pump failed. RATS Second in my class and 4th overall. %$#$()_)(*&^%$#@#$%^&*()_)(8

There is a post in the C4 tech section on manual racks.
IIRC it was a pricey proposition

Having had a hose fail on my 86 during an autocross I can imagine how heavy the steering felt when yours let go. I suspect that a manual rack would be considerably slower than a power rack so you would be able to steer the car for more than a minute or two.
Are you using the Turn 1 pump and hose setup on your C4? A buddy had continual hose failures on his 94 until he went with the complete Turn 1 pump and hose setup.
