Default Another Oil Question - Valvoline's conventional 20w-50 VR1

Anyone care to comment on it?

http://www.valvoline.com/products/br...g-motor-oil/6#

Compared to Mobil1 15w50?

There are some rebates and good pricing going on right now with it.

Thanks.

I use it but I have an older flat tappet type of cam which requires the higher additive concentrate that VR1 provides. Your engine on the other hand was designed for synthetics such as Mobil 1.

I think that statement is a bit misleading. I'm willing to bet that the engines weren't specifically designed for synthetics...but synthetics are specified because of the high oil temps that result if the cars are road tracked.

Example...LS1's in 4th gen camaros were recommended to run a conventional 5w-30. While same LS1 in corvette had Mobil-1 factory fill.

I change mine after every HPDE, so I don't think using this conventional will hurt anything.

Not to mention, FREE is nice.

I ran the Amsoil 20/50 all of last year. Oil temps would break 290+ even with oil cooler. Switched to 10/40 this year. Only one track day above 90*, but oil temps were ~270*. Will see as summer goes on. Just something to consider. Good luck with it.

6qts free after rebate (and I have lots of addresses to send to - )

I'll give it a try and if it runs too hot, I'll switch back.

I switch oil (no matter what I run) after all HPDEs anyway. Cheap compared to $7k-10k

Changing the oil after every event does nothing except occupy your time. If something was coming apart you may catch it by seeing metal but that usually don't happen. I would not run it and engines are made differently than they were with regular oil engines back a ways.

When I bought my Miller welder generator they guy told me run the oil spec'd or you will be back in short order because it will blow up. It was 10W40 or 10W30 forgot which one. He had them all the time coming back.

If you pop your motor on dino oil you may have no warranty either.
