Default GoProHd Motorsports, yes or no.

Is it a worthwhile "toy" to have , even just for spirited driving in the mountains, drag racing etc?

Great picture quality, but the GoPros all have a wide angle lens so things look far away, even if you mount the camera on the nose of your car. I like mine, but there are options that are a little better for the price for track video. It sucks when you were very close to the action and it appears that the other cars are miles away. Removes some of the intensity for the non-racers you show.

way better then the original go pro which sucked big time due to short AA battery life and low record times.

this new one is vastly improved.
they go for a decent price on ebay

The angle is too wide for my liking but the principle is great. We've shot a day of ice lapping recently using a variety of cameras of that type, I'll report back on our findings if it's interesting to people.

Just a note: you can't have your cake and eat it too: the wide angle makes it easier to compose a shot, and also increases the sense of speed. But, as noted previously, it increases the distances between you and other cars, or obstacles, etc. and it also crucially increases the perceived radius of turns; hairpins become less tight, 90 degree corners become wider sweepers, and so on.

They are good enough to be the sole camera for F1 this year! Just kidding, but I thought it was funny to see a $300 camera on a multimillion dollar car last week.

Yes, absolutely!!! I use mine for SCUBA (up to 185 feet) for flying, and for motorsports. I video'd last weekend's racing at TWS with CVAR. This camera allowed me to film ALL of the action which was going on in a 12 wide entry into turn 1 on lap 1

Hard to take a bad video with the GoPro

I can record 5 - 25 minute run sessions in HD with my 16 Gig Memory Card and a single battery charge.

I do have the new model.

I havent got one yet, but two issues come to mind, the audio and the rattle issue.
Audi is supposed to be pretty good, even up to 85mph. But, I havent see any user videos where the audio is great.
The rattles with the mount and case, any issues with that Ed?

I did use the open rear shield which makes it louder but what are you expecting to hear with a car going 45 to 120 besides high wind with a little motor noise?

No rattle issues, sound is ok.

Here is a link to one I shot at Infineon this past Saturday, turn up your speakers and you can here the engine noise with some wind. I use the open back case and mount inside my windshield in front of the rear view mirror.

Do the new models still have the (almost) microscopic digital icon characters that tell you how the camera is set? Talking about the display.

I have one that I've used for several different purposes. Bumper mount on the Vette for autocross, chest mount for alpine skiing, helmet mount for karting. It can pretty much do everything. As long as you make sure to install the rubber isolator it won't rattle a bit.

This is a video I took at a friend's birthday party running the north course at Pacific Grand Prix. It's using one of the helmet mounts on my HJC full face helmet with the open back case. The audio isn't that bad, if you listen closely you can hear me yell a bit when it starts to rain and I lose grip.
