Default So you want to get race licensed in SoCal?

Go to Buttonwillow the third weekend in March. It is time for the SCCA SuperSchool. The Thursday evening orientation and Friday/Saturday driving class is the path to get your SCCA racing license.

You will get a ton of track time; about seven hours over two days of driving. On Sunday you can even race your first race. The class is relatively inexpensive at around $500.

Bring a friend to help out as you will be on the track a lot. It is good to have someone to help fuel the car, change pads if required, etc.

If this is like NorCal and the other SCCA schools you & your car need to have all your safety gear (cage, etc) and pass SCCA tech inspection. Don't expect to show up with your daily driver and a helmet here...

Renting a Spec Miata with trackside support is pretty common...

You are correct. You do need to have a race ready car. It does not have to be for any particular class, but it does need to have the minimum safety components like a cage, race seat and harness system.

If you don't have that, you can rent one of the Spec Miatas from 7 Only at Buttonwillow. If you want to run something faster they also have the GT2 race cars that run identical lap times to my T1 car. Talk to Tom or Bette Dragoun over there, (661) 764-5456 or tdragoun at sevensonly.com/bdragoun at sevensonly.com
They will crew for you that weekend and everything....

So far we have one, and maybe two, new T1 drivers registered for this class.

You will get a lot of track time and some great instruction at this race school. There are even two short practices races at the end of the class. The best part is the race license you get at the end.

Cal Club’s Super Driver School Weekend

Buttonwillow, CA March 5, 2011 – The California Sports Car Club will be presenting their annual Super School at the Buttonwillow Raceway Park March 24, 25 and 26. A Super School offers a unique opportunity for aspiring road racers to obtain their license in one weekend. Students attend class on Thursday evening and then hit the track on Friday and Saturday with some of the best instructors in the business. The students must have a fully prepared race car which can be rented from many sources that support the program or use their own race car.

What makes Cal Club’s school different, other than its reasonable cost, is the school is run on a regular Regional race weekend. So when the students successfully complete the school they can have their first race on Sunday, competing with experienced racers. It is an opportunity to start polishing skills fresh from 2 days of instruction.

Anyone interested can call the Cal Club Office at 661.764.5945 or email calclubhq@aol.com

Cal Club is a region of the Sports Car Club of America and majority owner of Buttonwillow Raceway Park, which is its home track. Cal Club is 61 years old with nearly 2,000 members, offering competition programs in road racing, time trials, solo and road rally. The Club has a rich history producing some of the world’s most noted drivers and the best race volunteer workers the sport has ever seen. Cal Club has provided staff to many major road racing programs from Indy Car, AMA, Formula One, Grand Am and Petite Le Mans in addition to hundreds of their own events.

The Time Trial sessions are only $200 for the weekend to drive Saturday AND Sunday.

The Super School is almost full at 25 drivers, but the Time Trial session only has 8 drivers so far! It sounds like a lot of open track time to me. They usually have instructors for the drivers doing Time Trial.

Think of the Time Trial as just a track day or HPDE since it is really more like that, but a very friendly, casual and supportive environment. You will likely get a chance to walk portions of the course with an instructor during the lunchtime downtime.
