Default side impact GM crash box

Has anyone installed the side crash box instead of the two side rails on a cage? Your thoughts? Where did you get it ? Cost? Thanks.

These are not installed in place of the bars, they are installed between the bars and the door-skin.

yes, they are in addition to FIA straight bars. World Challenge require both straight bars AND Nascar bars in their cars, unless you have access to engineered crush structure (no DIY jobs)

I think GM used the impaxx foam. NASCAR had it too. I priced out a piece for use on my vette and the block of foam was $800 bucks! That was several years ago. If people have pictures of this foam in several applications it would be interesting to see.

The box is in place of the Nascar bars. I contacted P&M a few years ago and they will sell one for $875.00

Greg (zo6zoom) and I were talking to Foug Fehan at RA a few years back and he was the one that offered and told us to call P&M. Greg has called but with no return call as of now.

I talked with P&M about buying one last year and they told me it would be $850 - $900, it attaches to the door bars, but you would want a flat surface to mount it to. I talked to Dave Albright at P&M and he sent me the info. There are 7 mounting points and he sent me a schematic of one of them. We decided not to install the crash box and just ended up doing the NASCAR door bars.
We kind of ran out of time and waiting for a crash box wasn't going to fit into our schedule, if you are thinking of installing one I would've started talking to P&M the week after they got back from Petit.

I'm not questioning the value but how does it work? The nascar bars prevent intrusion but is rigid so you still feel 100% of the hit. I guess the crashbox disipates energy until you get to the bars and that transfers energy after that? I think the crashbox is for the other car to crush not for my body to hit? Anyway, anything you can find out about these structures would be a great interest to me. Pictures up close help too.

Back in about 2008 WRC was working on 70G side impact crash structures. Does anyone know about those?

Around 2008:
""A high-g sled at DEKRA was commissioned for development testing where it was demonstrated that a high velocity 70g side impact could be survived without serious injury.""
