Default Anyone running NON-r comps in a 275/17 square

I bought a set of 17 inch wheels and I was planning on running nitto nt05's in 275 40 17 square. I don't want to run R-comps and was curious if anyone was running a NON-R comp tire in this size of any track/auto-x?

I know it's s small size, but cost wise it is a cheap tire to run on the track. TIA

I'm just finishing up my first set of 275-40R17 Falken Azenis RT615 (original compound) tires on my 89 Z51. Good for auto-x in their day, but don't like heat build up and tend to feel greasy when hot. Wouldn't use them for track days for that reason.

Your Nitto's should be a good tire for both auto-x and track days according to feedback from local users. However, testing by GRM tends to favor the Kumho ECSTA XS for auto-xing on hot summer days and/or track days.

How do you like the tire and size? Ever feel like not enough grip out back?

Yeah, I have that issue of GRM, my only complaint is the 05's are not tested. So hard to do an apples to apples comparison. But, I am open to other tires... just had the 05's on my mind.

How do you like the size, do you feel you have enough grip on the rears vs a 285/295?

I notice you're running a '00 hardtop, IMHO the absolutely BEST vette ever built.

I've run a 275 square setup, and the car had quite a bit of oversteer; I'd expect that to happen regardless of your tire compound. 275/315 had quite a bit of understeer, mainly when putting the power down coming out of a turn, but also in a steady state turn to a smaller degree.

275/305 got rid of almost all of the understeer, and 305/315 (on 18" wheels) seems to be perfectly neutral.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Thanks for your input.. I was thinking 275 F 285/295 R in an 18" may be a better size, but cost wise the 17's are CHEAP!!!

I just wanted to get opinions on this as I am looking at tires. Cause I am still open to selling the 17's and buying 18's if that is the best option for the standard HPDE/trackdays I plan on doing. I will NOT be w2w racing.

I have a 86 C4 , not a whole lot of power to work with .
285s were 3 pounds more but the size specs listed were the same as 275s .
If I had a c5 i might be looking at 18s
Plenty of grip in the back , car seems to be a little on the pushy side . Only a couple laps on the new tires and that was on a banked oval . Trackday coming up at Blackhawk
Fast warm up on the xs

I run the 275-40-17's on all four corners of a C4 primarily for a cost savings, and the ability to rotate in all directions for even tire wear. You can alter the understeer / oversteer somewhat with springs, swaybars, and shock configuration. to get your particular car (and driver) to a neutral condition. Driving style has a whole lot to do with that.

275's are plentiful, low cost, and, many brands available. I run 3 sets of wheels with 3 different tire types for different pavements and anticipated usage that weekend. All 275-40-17's

Wider isn't always better, you can only get so much of the tire in contact with the pavement....regardless of width!!

I have the Kumho XS in 275/40/17 and love them. A little rougher ride than my SPT's or my V710's. You can step the rear end out if you want too, I can with 295 V710's so sure on a street tire, but it is very predictable.

I ran into a neat trick though. I bought my set from Tire Rack right after the Pro Solo here in El Toro California. One of the guys had won a bunch of Kumho bucks between the San Diego event and the El Toro event. He didn't need tires, so got permission from Kumho to use the bucks on something other than V tires and ordered me a set of XS. I paid 75 cents on the dollar, + full shipping to my door, he had to pay tire rack full price but he submitted the claim with the Kumho bucks and got full reimbursement. I got my tires at a great discount, he got $598 in cash bucks that otherwise would have expried. If you have a national or divisional event in your area look to see if anyone is selling their Kumho bucks.

And this is very true... just sometimes your brain says xxx is better than xxx without ever trying, thus my asking.
