C7 of Year Finalist (track prepared) 2019

Default Katech carbon fiber decklid with lexan rear window

You may have noticed that with the release of our 2010 catalog today (http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-z...-revealed.html) that there were some secrets revealed which have not previously been talked about on the forum. One of those was that I have been working on a direct bolt-on carbon fiber rear decklid for the C6. It will be made from pure carbon fiber and finished on both sides. If you want to paint the top side to match body color you can. The decklid will retain full hinges and hardware for ease of use and installation. It will be sold as a complete decklid assembly with lexan rear window already installed, or for those that want to do it themselves or retain the glass, a decklid-only version will be available.

This is a great product for track guys or weight freaks (who will remain nameless) who want to shave some weight off their car and make it look very cool too. We're expecting some very significant weight savings. Price will be reasonable. We're expecting the first shipment sometime this month. At that time we will fit the first lexan, get some weights, and finalize the pricing. We'll make sure to get some pictures and post the weight and price as soon as we know. I'm really looking forward to this item!

Update, and it's not a good one. Almost one year later and the manufacturer can not get this done for us. We are taking this to another manufacturer. Back to square one. It's so hard to find good help these days.

No surprise through the years no matter if cars or race boats people who work with resins and cloth are a bit off.

I'd be hard pressed to spend that type of coin to lose 20lbs. I've seen people dissect the stock C5 hatch so only the outer panel remains. Add lexan and bam

I'm not saying that I don't want to do it. One year into this and I'm still trying to get a C6 part.

With the dollars that it cost to develop this item the people that are running track cars that are willing to spend on something like this will be running newer cars than a C5. As the years past it just gets worse. I guess soon they are so old they can't run in T-1 and the likes.

I think you underestimate the savings...

A carbon-fiber clamshell for a C4 drops 70 lbs...

Just sayin'...

Too bad your manufacturer bailed Jason. Hope you can get it back "on track" soon

I don't doubt it on a C4.... but with a C5 hatch you can seperate the inner and outer parts of the panel and have the SMC outer-panel and then swap the glass for lexan. The glass is the bulk of the weight.

I mean if you've got money to burn then have fun

This is what we did on our C6 Rolex GT Corvette. Also took out the metal support at the top. Weighs little more than a CF race piece.

Bought the lexan window from Fivestar and the whole assembly locks on with nice small camlocks.

I kind of like it... I mean the C5 is becoming a "junkyard" race car i.e. I can get parts quickly and cheaply off of the forums, or eBay, etc. I'd rather get cheap stock body panels if/when I bang it up vs. having some fancy rare carbon fiber part all to save 5lbs. Then when it gets messed up it's a PITA to replace. It's not quite a Miata, but it's getting there

Just my $0.02
